I've been consoling myself for the last 5/6 weeks of mostly cold rain whilst other places get snow, that there must be a total weirdo somewhere whose favourite weather type is cold rain and he's having an all time classic winter as a result. Whilst me and my fellow Kentites are moaning about 2c and rain from the only weather type that usually guarantees snow down here, the easterly, my imaginary weirdo will be rating Jan 2021 as one of the best winter months of all time.

Oi, don't leave out us South Essexshites that are suffering the same fate.

Essex is so far North I assumed you'd had lying snow for most of January TBH

As far as my back yard is concerned, this winter has been like the Lynx body spray . . . as in stinking of disappointment and Folkestone.

Well at least that's January out of the way. Things always start to feel much better once we hit February and the improvements really start to become noticeable.

Yes, I wasn't really being serious (even though I'd absolutely love it!)

But this winter has been incredibly frustrating. You've had slightly better snow than we have, but even I'd have had double I'd still feel underwhelmed.

More cold rain just don't seem possible to get snow here anymore, unless the conditions all align perfectly.

More frustration to come if the easterly comes off, looks like the Feb 91 type distribution  -

From December 27th 2020, zonality will be banned from mixing with the UK. We appreciate that this may come as a shock to younger people and old Uncle Barty. This ban will last for a minimum of ten days.

And now potentially off the menu full stop.

Been a winter of disappointments. Wouldn't be surprised if the perfect synoptics come to fruition in mid-March

Yep - we will probably have the perfect positioned long fetch easterly, except it will be the wrong side of marginal.

Wouldn't be surprised to get snow - but it doesn't half melt quickly. The final March 13 fall gave us about 12cm level, with drifts. Even with air temps at 0c-2c and cloudy, the rate of melting was heartbreaking, and all but snow piles/snowman remnants was gone by the following weekend; when the sun came out, it was brutal.

That's when I much prefer a Dec/Jan snowy spell. The Jan 10 fall was still on the ground at the end of the month with similar temps (yes I know other factors would have been at play in each case)

Last couple of months we've had countless runs showing a great snowy potential here, and even some events have looked full of promise just 24 hours out.

None have delivered (beyond 2 or 3 falls of a paltry couple of cm's and the same number of dustings)

The latest set up shows the SE and E getting a lot of snow for the first real time this winter, with west of the Pennines getting all but diddly.

I bet these are the charts that finally come off.

I remember one day in March 2013 where we had sunshine and a high of 1C, but surprisingly little snow melt. Likewise very little thaw in March 2018.

-9.8 here so far tonight, an monthly average of 0.2C for january , 43 days of lying snow, starting to get bored with this “poor “ winter everyone’s on about. Last years average in jan was 5.5C and no snow , that was Poor !!!!

Haven't had as much snow as that, but since xmas had more days with lying snow than without

Anomaly maps out - Scotland was generally about 2c colder than average - which itself is starting from a colder average than down south

The downside is that with working from home and the kids home-schooling my heating bill is going to astronomical 😞

Yet more rain. That was over 100mm for January at it has rained on 21 of the last 30 days. I'm looking into how to grow rice in my front garden.

The worst cold spell by definition is one that misses your location but effects almost everybody else. That’s why one day I’m moving! I can’t do the winters down here..

I am upset the fact that this will be yet another non event for the far south and south west with all the snow in the east and south east. Furthermore, it appears like we won't get any frost either due to the persistent cloud cover and wind! I understand the uncertainty but this doesn't look good at all for those snow starved southern and south western areas.
