The graphics made it look like low lying parts of the central belt would get clobbered, including Edinburgh. Maybe it’s the limitations of the graphics as the MetO app for instance shows no snow whatsoever for Edinburgh whereas significant snow for Biggar.

I'm in Edinburgh and it's snowing heavily here right now. Probably rain in Leith 🙂

Hence my “further south” comment.

ECM has been quite persistent in showing some snow for NW England early Thursday.

Possibly a better chance than Friday, more sleet/snow symbols about on Met Office automated for Thursday morning too.

Such a complex set up that anything could happen, no WW for snow in Scotland today but seems to be snowing heavily South of Edinburgh.

Good evening.

(I’m just getting grumpy at the thought of yet more rain when the rest of the planet is getting snow. Now I sound like Jiries )

We need to move to Edinburgh Michael.  The Costa del Aberdeen(shire) is having a dreadful run of winters for snow recently.

Good evening Doc! :D

Must be very annoying that the snowiest city in the UK is suddenly not so snowy.

Maybe we need a Retron-style thread. The death of the mid winter northerly?

I remember being frequently jealous as a kid seeing the snowy Aberdeen rooftops on the weather cams on the TV forecasts.

Anyway. Mildly off topic. :D

Looks like parts of Scotland could be in for a memorable snow event. 20cm to 40cm over quite a wide area.

Or a lot rain/sleet and disappointment away from the hills in many areas.

I suspect the south (Southern Uplands), possibly Central Belt and much of the Highlands will do pretty well. The t850s are not very supportive elsewhere. https://www.wetterzentrale.de/maps/GFSOPUK18_42_2.png

have to agree with you there, even as far inland as Cragganmore , it’s forecasting sleet throughout this “big snow” event. Will be interesting to see what height the snowline ends up. I have no doubt Grantown, aviemore carrbridge etc will get a dumping.

Heavy lying snow here at the moment , this was not forecast for tonight the system seems to be further north than was anticipated.

You can see the snow on the Traffic Scotland Website by opening the traffic cam for Glenfarg there is a camera on the M90 about 3 miles North of Kinross .

Plenty of models are showing rain turning to snow overnight tonight as the low pivots, generally across the Pennines and Peaks but even to more low lying parts of NW England.

I’m also pleased to note that the snow potential over the weekend looks to have increased somewhat. The convective window from Irish Sea showers appears to be longer and the air looks fairly unstable , I really wouldn’t be surprised for some areas to see snow this weekend.

This is Euro 4’s take on snow lying midnight tonight btw

Edinburgh and the Borders look to do fairly well.
