In addition to everything else which I have mentioned here, this is also going to make my next post on this month's PW thread very interesting indeed.

When we had our wettest February on record earlier on this year, the highest daily total within that month was set so high that it would never be expected to be beaten this year. That in turn was compounded by the fact that up until now, this summer had been nowhere near as wet as last summer.

Of course, rainfall totals don't always end up being as high as I would expect them to be at any given time. However, I wouldn't be surprised if tonight's weather was to end up giving us a high enough rainfall total to at the very least, challenge that total which we had back in February as our wettest day of this year so far., especially as the current official observation day for rainfall doesn't end until 10am tomorrow morning.

The actual figure to beat for that is 39.6 mm as recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank on 8 February 2020 and if today's rainfall total beats that figure in the end, that will already have confirmed this summer's status as a wetter than average summer, as well as this month's status as a wetter than average month regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Last year's wettest day at Edinburgh Gogarbank resulted in a higher total than that, with a total of 45.6 mm on 24 June 2019, so there is every chance that today could in the end, go down as our wettest day of this year so far, solely as a result of this incredible weather which is ongoing just now.

Yes, I have just noticed that our original yellow warning for thunderstorms had been upgraded to an amber one. To me, that probably should have happened a while ago, along with possibly a separate warning for the rain.

The way that this has turned out as well, I wouldn't even have been surprised if we were under an actual red warning for thunderstorms just now, even though I'm not sure about whether or not, such a warning has ever been issued by the Met Office.

I'm down at my dad's place in Somerset and have been up to the Quantocks tonight to watch the meteor shower but instead were amazed to be able to clearly see the lighting from the thunderstorm passing to the west and North of Birmingham! That's around 150 miles away as the core flies. I checked on the radar and there's no other storm that it could possibly be. Was an amazing sight.

New storms keep forming in the Borders around Peebles and feeding north into the boiling maelstrom over the Forth.

I certainly wouldn't want to be out and about just now. In fact, I would have regarded that as being a rather dangerous thing to do as a result of the possibility of actually being struck by one of those extremely frequent bolts of lightning.

That in turn has made me wonder whether or not, a red warning might actually have been more appropriate here, rather than the amber warning which we are currently under.

We were after all, under a red warning for snow when we had that Beast from the East event back in February 2018, so there is probably no reason why we couldn't have been under a red warning for thunderstorms just now.

A cell is sprouting up over the Strait of Dover where I can see lightning to my south. Not sure or can't tell what it'll do next because it is very slow moving.

My it is slow for you Steve and Ian. Looking at the main storms around the country, hardly moving either the flooding in these areas could be pretty bad.

The rain has eased off a bit now here in Edinburgh, but there is still some thunder and lightning around even now as I write.

Some early rainfall data from that is starting to emerge from my usual sources at SEPA. This currently only goes up to 11pm last night but in just one single hour alone between 10pm and 11pm last night, the incredible total of 18.0 mm of rain fell out of these storms at Edinburgh Gogarbank according to that data, along with the almost equally incredible total of 16.2 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that even if the current official observation day doesn't go down as our wettest day of this year in the end, it will almost certainly go down as our wettest day of this summer so far.

Excellent thunder and lightning here earlier. Incredibly frequent lightning at its peak. Things have died off now with moderate rain.

Cracking storm though.

Your storm was visible from here!  Hubby woke at 3am and said the sky to our North was providing an excellent light show with large constant flashes across the sky.  Northern lights!
No thunder or rain and it’s a clear sky above us, so it must have been high up.  I can’t believe he didn’t wake me!
