I assumed I'd just cancel or re-arrange, but that greedy, grabbing scumbag O'Leary has announced RyanAir flights will be restarting early July. Given their [illegal] withholding of fares for flights they've not fulfilled, I think the chances of being able to cancel and get my cash back is zilch, and if I want to rearrange no doubt prices will have spiked for alternative dates and I'll have to pay a hefty surcharge. I only used them because they're they only ones flying to & from Murcia International on the days we wanted.

Knew I'd regret it.

 I'm acutely aware of that!

If the Foreign Office advice is not to travel, then you should be entitled to a refund from Ryanair.  You will no doubt have to fight for it though.  If you took out insurance, they’ll pay up on FO advice if the airline refuse a refund.

Sorry for stating the bleedin’ obvious!   I knew you’d be acutely aware but it’s my go-to phrase these days, as you’ll understand why.  I do hope you manage to get away.

Not 20%, but my colleagues and I (excluding those furloughed) have been basically forced to accept a 10% pay cut for the good of the company with no end date given, effective from the start of April.

As both of our annual family holidays have now been cancelled by the operators, that's about £10,000 that I won't be spending, so I won't miss the 10% of my take-home pay that I won't be getting. Then there's fuel costs; I drove 27 miles in April, normally it would be well over 1,000 miles a month.

Interesting article comparing infection rates in Sweden and Ireland. In particular, it compares ICU admissions in the two countries. You would think that this ought to be a good way of comparing countries. Obviously, there are significant differences in the way different states record deaths and apparent infection rates will differ based on the amount of testing done. However, international admission rates to ICU ought to be reasonably comparable. The article suggests that Sweden's infection rate is 3 times worse than Ireland's. By way of comparison to the UK, our figures are better than yours but not significantly. So all in all, the above suggests that Sweden may be the woest affected country in Eurpe. Which wouldn't be a huge surprise, of course.

That's very interesting Lionel. Do you know the source of these figures as I'd like to look at a number of other countries if possible. Thanks

Yep. The lowest number of positive tests since 31st March, despite having tested over 60,000 people.

The number of deaths is higher than the last 3 days as expected, but compares well with last Tuesday given the figures include a catch-up from a long weekend.

Yeah, don't worry. As if it's not bad enough to be spat in the face and die of Corona virus. COuld you tell me your context when it's ok to spit in a ticket collector's face ??

. I had Stansted to Murcia on 21 March to go out to my brothers place. He is like your friends, a couple of months each time. Still waiting for refund for that. Have another flight booked 29 June, this time to Almeria, as for some unknown reason was cheaper than Murcia when I booked it, and have now got to wait and see for that one. I don’t suppose the fact that is is s return flight for a week, and that Spain have now put a 14 day self isolation into affect, will change OLearys mind about refunds.

I think Four's thinking is that it might reflect badly on angry, violent, possibly racist scumbags and he doesn't want them demonised.

You've let yourself down with this post. Shame, because you made some good points earlier but this one is abject.

I much prefer to pay that bit extra and fly with BA.

I've only ever flown once with Ryan Air and it was dire. Massive jump up to Easy Jet. BA not great and only just above Easy Jet these days so not worth the extra on a flight under 4 hours in my opinion.

Wish you luck. I'd be happy with a reschedule to any available date at the same price - but RyanAir won't even do that, just give you a credit for the fare you've lost to put to a more expensive flight. He's a multi-billionaire, spends €millions racehorses, but tries to screw every last quid out of his customers. Problem is, it's often the only option

Other than what's in the article, I don't really have any source for these figures. A quick google shows lots of by country comparisons for deaths and infection rates but I couldn't find any global tables for ICU admissions. Given the difficulties with comparing stats between countries, you would think that ICU admissions might be a clearer way of comparing. Unless, of course, some countries are quicker to admit people to ICU than others.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Looking at the above table, the Swedes haven't really been doing a great job on testing either. They're well behind Ireland on testing - we have 214K tests while they have 148K tests and remember that they have twice our population. On a per capita basis, they also seem to be well below the UK in terms of testing. Despite the relatively low testing levels, they're still not far behind the UK on overall infection rates on a per capita basis. The only metric on which the Swedes are ahead of the UK is on deaths. However, it all depends on how deaths are recorded and the earlier article that I posted suggests that the Swedes are a little bit shy of recording Corona virus as a cause of death. It's interesting to focus on Sweden given that they have a much lighter lockdown than most.
