Both Boulmer & Leeming are officiall metoffice stations and they're standing at 0.4mm of rainfall so far this April.

It looks as though the rainfall totals on that list are rounded off to the nearest 1 mm. Boulmer and Leeming are on that list as you have said, but so is Edinburgh Gogarbank and all three of those stations are shown to have a rainfall total for this month of just 1 mm.

However, the actual total for Edinburgh Gogarbank can be interpreted in a number of different ways depending on which source we use to obtain that data. If we go by the data from weathercast.co.uk, the total for this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank comes out as 0.6 mm which does indeed, round up to 1 mm when reported to the nearest 1 mm.

According to SEPA though (which is the source which I always use for my reports on these threads), the total for Edinburgh Gogarbank is actually only 0.4 mm (as can be verified here) which actually rounds down to 0 mm when reported to the nearest 1 mm.

The above links show a number of stations where no rainfall data is shown, and we can assume that no rainfall data is actually reported for those stations on that particular site. Out of all of those stations where rainfall data is shown though, there isn't a single station there which is actually reporting a total of 0 mm.

Because of that, I think that I have quite a valid claim there for Edinburgh Gogarbank being the actual driest station on that list.

It clearly states 0.4mm so I'm not sure where you are getting the rounded to nearest 1mm as that is not rounded.

And it also says 0.6mm for Edinburgh gogarbank - remember this is metoffice data

Sorry, I was looking in the wrong place. These data lists can be confusing at first because there are actually two places on it where rainfall is mentioned. I was looking towards the right-hand side of this list, and only noticing where it refers  to rainfall there. I had obviously therefore, mixed that up with the actual rainfall totals which are shown much further to the left, and noticed that what I was actually referring to here was the percentage of the monthly average, as rounded to the nearest 1% (hence, that would be shown as 1% for Edinburgh Gogarbank).

By looking in the proper place, I did indeed, notice that the actual total for Edinburgh Gogarbank is actually shown as 0.6 mm which as you have said, is the official Met Office figure for that. As to where that actually comes from, I will assume that the Met Office takes this from the SYNOP data, along with the other data for temperature and everything else.

On that note, I then looked up the SYNOP data for Edinburgh Gogarbank from a site at meteomanz.com (ogimet.com also has that info) and from that, I noticed that the rainfall total for Edinburgh Gogarbank does indeed, show up as 0.6 mm for this month. The data for SEPA is different because it just uses the data from its own set of rain gauges as that data comes through.

On a more professional note, I should really be using official Met Office data on these reports but then, I am a bit of a Scottish Nationalist and since SEPA is an official agency of the Scottish Government which then uses that data in all of their various reports as a result, that is why I go by the SEPA data on these threads when I am reporting the various totals for both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Still on 1.4mm here, and the past 16 days none at all.

Looks like April could end up being a wet one, one could even say potentially a wash out  Rainfall totals so far around 33mm anything that falls will simply add to it - April average is around 42mm for here.

A wet end for sure, but ECM is looking quite frankly, toasty in the not too distant future. Could we be seeing just a short wet spell followed by more warm and dry weather?

Hope so. Only 20mm here for April which came all in one go IIRC, but that will probably double before the end of the month.

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.

Believe it or not, the official observation day which ended at 10am this morning (09:00 UTC) was actually the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations, despite the fact that there will only be two days left to go of this month as at 10am tomorrow morning, and the fact that neither of those above totals were enough to produce an official rain day at either of those stations.

Furthermore, the model output for more unsettled weather ahead has recently become more downgraded into a mostly England (and Wales) only affair which once again shows that it nearly always seems to be England (and particularly the south of England) which gets all of the more "interesting" weather which is going.

For here, the chance of rain has now been reduced to possibly occurring on Wednesday night with nothing other than the chance of some showers apart from that. Any really significant rain has now been pushed back into a short period further into May and even with that, the general outlook for here is no longer looking all that unsettled.

Because of that, this is still looking very likely to be our driest April on record overall, if not our driest month on record.

A good soaking from today's rain. Looks like there may be a little more yet to come, but so far today we've had 16.5mm.

We had 15.3mm from April 1st-27th (15.0mm of this was on 17th/18th) so the total has more than doubled to 31.8mm, not much below average despite so many dry and sunny days.

Today's PPN has reached much further north than both the BBC and Met Office were forecasting, even up to yesterday. It's mainly light, but still depressing. Still, it's given everywhere a dust-down and we're looking more verdant now.

That just shows the hit and miss nature of showers as this almost makes up for that time earlier on this month when there was a shower in your part of the south of Edinburgh, which completely missed us here in the north of Edinburgh. That in turn is why it took until last night for this month's total at Edinburgh Gogarbank to finally get above 1 mm with just a few days to go.

I will assume that you are using actual Met Office data there for the total at Edinburgh Gogarbank, which is slightly different to what I have quoted above due to the fact that I am still using the SEPA which can often differ from the official Met Office data by around 0.2 mm or so for every hour of observation. That in turn, causes monthly and seasonal totals to be slightly different as well.

However, that is why I always refer to my own reports as being unofficial reports which tell us what the various totals for each station are from the data which I have used, and which should never in any way been seen as any sort of accurate account of what those totals actually are.
