Interestingly the MetO app is showing heavy snow

for here tomorrow from 5-9am.

Could be an interesting rush hour if that happens!

9am tomorrow - we could have some lying snow if the low doesn’t change track - stay north please!

Morning Joe.  Met Office app also shows some snow here overnight but mostly light. Somewhere like Settle much to the NW has heavy snowfall overnight and much of the snowfall on the Euro4 above appears well up the NW side of England .

Makes me think, is it enhanced showery activity that is the cause rather than the main front which will be further south?

Based on this morning’s equivalent chart there is snow here (you can guess the reality unless they include frost!)

I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw snow falling though. Higher ground in Wales and the Midlands may see something a bit more significant for a time.

Morning Tim!

You may well be right - I haven’t been watching this one too closely in all honesty. I do usually raise an eyebrow if the MetO app shows heavy snow however, especially with this longevity. We’ll see.

Morning Doc.

Thats interesting as the Euro 4 snow accumulation chart has been very accurate in recent winters. If anything it’s usually the conservative one compared to others, and usually correct!

It’s a shame if it has been altered in any way.

Thursday was looking OK for the SE earlier in the week. London northwards looks OK, perhaps higher elevations in the SE could do OK as well.

I 'think' I saw a few flakes last night around 8pm

Yes you're right Joe but it does seem to be a good deal less accurate this year.

Scanning the various model output I think that’s right: the low pressure is akin to a Channel Low with the associated precipitation band pushing up towards The Wash, plus or minus. The enhancement of shower activity is more pronounced on some models than others.

As often in these set ups it looks like precipitation intensity will be critical: the light stuff falling as rain or sleet but anything heavier likely to tip the scales. Plus the wrap around with colder air being dragged south also shifts the odds.

Based on the latest output for here I'm expecting falling snow this time tomorrow but limited settling due to ground temperature and earlier drizzle/rain/sleet.

As Doc has said, it hasn't had a good winter. It overdid the snow during the early hour of Monday. I mentioned it in a post that I thought it has gone bonkers with the snow accumulations although at the last minute, it pulled back.

We'll have to see what happens but I'm not holding my breath.

I still rate the Euro4 better than all the other high-res such as Arome, Arpege, NMM which seem to vastly over exaggerate snowfall.
It did okay for here on Monday, highlighting lying snow but was a bit over the top. Has been decent for the last 48 hours putting us on the edge of any snowfall and we have had slushy coverings. Worked well in December, again picking out the snowfall that affected the Dales and gave us a thin covering.

I know it's a bit amateur but the Met Office app is the most reliable IMO. If it shows precipitation and a temp at your location of 1c or less then you have a good chance of snowfall. It predicts the temperature profile very well , maybe not exactly when precipitation will fall or the type but you can interpret this from the temperature. Worked well on Monday for all the areas I checked. On that basis, tomorrow morning does look interesting in places in the NW. Stockport for example has a temp of 1c with heavy snow for a period. Think it looks borderline though for low lying areas, elevation of 100m might be required.

Met Office has a yellow warning out from the M4 northwards into the Midlands. Meanwhile for me the Met Office is showing heavy rain with a temperature of 1C and "feels like" -2C. Lovely stuff for the last commute to London!

Yup, looks thoroughly miserable underneath that rain down here. Thursday happens to be by commute by bike day too - 20 miles of cold and wet isn't appetising The consolation of a bit of back edge snow seems to have dwindled on the latest runs, so may well manage a snow flake free winter after all.

For those in the 'sweet spot' though at least there might be a snow event to close the winter

The North Downs should get a few cms of wet snow tomorrow morning above 150-200m.

Tim A

Snow warning for the north states:

'Wintry showers are expected to continue through Wednesday night into Thursday morning, especially over Northern Ireland and western Scotland, before developing more widely across parts of northern England, the north Midlands and north Wales later in the night. This will leave surfaces wet, leading to icy stretches developing on untreated surfaces. Showers will fall as a mixture of hail, sleet and snow. Some places are likely to see 1-3 cm of snow, mainly above 100 m, with 5-10 cm possible above 400 m.'

I think the 100m is about right in NW England. Should be some good falls for those who have been disappointed this week across parts of Greater Manchester and further snow for western parts of Yorks.

We will be on the edge of it again, so perhaps a thin slushy covering.

Could well be 5 days in a row with fresh lying snow for some modest height areas in the Pennines e.g parts of Halifax, Bradford and Dales towns as there is also some potential Friday morning for snow before it turns to rain.

Low resolution model output. Probably thinks a shower on the top of exmoor is the entire SW.
