i was looking at the radar and thinking the rain seems to be going much further north than forecast and missing the Amber area in the south. But maybe that other blob will do it?

Difficult to see from this angle Brian but to me it looks as though they've missed a row of tiles, why because the lead flashing should be fixed with tingles along it's edge with the row of tiles underneath this is to stop exactly what's happened here, also they've probably used the wrong grade of lead (too thin) which the wind can lift easily.

well the warning doesn’t start till 12.15. Arpege seems to have modelled it ok, heaviest stuff not starting here till about 3am and going on till lunchtime.

I don't think they've missed a row of tiles. The roof is flat so the tiles need to finish just below it I would have thought. The flashing could be too thin though I agree. Pic below shows it close up.

Have to say that's quite an impressive mass of rain on the radar at the moment. Looking at the speed and direction there's plenty more to come in my location. My mum lives right next to the river Wharfe and it's looking a bit concerning.

Admittedly it's early days but currently the RADAR seems to   suggest the stuff to the north shifts off north-eastwards and the   stuff over France  has a northern edge over the channel with Southern England in "no mans land" in the middle.  Plenty of time for another scenario to develop though.

Very high winds and heavy rain here for last couple of hours, really quite scary and significantly worse than the last event. I would describe it as squally. Worried for low lying parts of S Wales and SW Midlands. Think we are going to see some unprecedented flooding. Stay safe.

Looks like they've dressed a grade4 lead onto the tiles, probably because it's easy to dress over the tiles, which hasn't been done too tidily, being above the tiles a grade 7 or 8 would have been much better although harder to dress, a good leadsman would have seen that ok. With that grade of lead the wind wouldn't have lifted it. Much more expensive but probably worth the extra.

Yes, got today totally wrong for the S.E. 2.2mm and 35 mph not much for an amber warning! I can see it is really bad and fully justified elsewhere in the Country though. I think tomorrow may be catchup time for us on the rainfall stakes though.

Wind wise, it's on a par with Ciara down here - complete with the lights flickering, UPS-clicking conditions. That's actually not normal for winter down here and it's noteworthy that we've had two such storms within a week of each other. Peak gusts at the local yacht club so far are 58 compared with 62 for Ciara. They're in the 50s here, too, going by the shuddering of the (wooden) upstairs of my house.

Rain wise, nothing to write home about yet as it's just fizzling as it heads over Kent. That should change later this morning.

The squall line will be "interesting" later. It's moving much more slowly than the one did with Ciara.

If you have a look on Flight Radar (nerd alert!) there are plenty of go-arounds happening at Gatwick this morning. The Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong has attempted to land at least twice now.

140mm of rain in one weekend is not “standard winter stuff”, especially coming in the back of another bad storm just a week ago. One thing this winter certainly is not is “standard”, as the record NAO shows.
