The day has ended on a sunny note here and in the end, a total of 7.2 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today our sunniest day of this winter so far and since today is the last day of the month, it will now go down as the sunniest day of this month in the overall final statistics for that station which I will be releasing after midnight on a new thread on this forum in the usual manner.
I will add though that in complete contrast to what the situation may well have been like elsewhere, this winter has actually been sunnier than average overall in this part of the world anyway (both December and now, this month have been sunnier than average here) whereas I would much rather be getting those sunnier than average conditions during the summer when I am more likely to be actually looking for that (one condition of a decent summer is that it should be sunnier than average of course), rather than right now in the depths of winter when the contributions from that towards the overall annual sunshine total are at their minimum due to the much shorter days at this time of the year.
So in case anyone else tells me that at least we have our sunshine here, I just thought that I would point this out. With all of that sunshine as well, the temperature briefly got to at or above freezing which in turn scuppered our chances of an official ice day here. On that note, today's maximum temperature was 1.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 0°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and had it not been for that very brief period (which wasn't even long enough for that to be picked up at weathercast.co.uk) at 3:20pm this afternoon when the temperature reached 0°C at Edinburgh Airport, today would have been going down as an official ice day there and that is what is so frustrating about that.
In any case though, the temperatures have been dropping away nicely once again after sunset, and an official air frost has already set in again at all three of my local stations, so the temperature at 6pm this evening was -3.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -4°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
