This is absurd -Temperature now risen to +4c in less than 1 hour -1c with really harsh sharp frost at 09:00. A rise in 5c in temps so  no wonder we had rain at -1c.

Also not much in the way of snow over Ireland ATM either? :o

It turns out that the Sun wasn't out for long here in Edinburgh.

This has resulted in a total of 6 minutes of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 9am. However, thick freezing fog has now closed in which has reduced visibility to probably around 50 yards. This could make the rest of today very interesting if this fog hangs around for any length of time because if it does, that is likely to prevent the temperature from going up too much during today which could in the end, result in today being our first official ice day of this winter.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -6.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -8°C at Edinburgh Airport and -5.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes last night, the coldest night of this winter so far at all three of my local stations.

In the meantime, the temperature at 9am this morning was -6.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -6°C at Edinburgh Airport and -5.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A more tropical 4.2 c at this coastal edge of Kent now that winds has picked up to as moderate SE. Still bright with hazy fuzzy sun at the moment and all the frost are gone but tonight looks a bit bleak.

Did manage a min of -3.3 c at 8 am, though.

5.5c and windy with ominous looking dark fast moving clouds. Pressure 991mb - Looks like it is at it's mildest because maxes today here in the SW were only meant to be +4C in Plymouth and 6C in Penzance and Exeter is usually a degree or two colder! - just awaiting the rain to come so that it can turn back to snow via evaporative cooling and soon. Either way this precipitation band looks 3x more long lived and intense and it's in much colder air in comparison to Tuesday/Tuesday nights weather front.

Could today break the January record and actually see the first significant January snowfall in the SW since January 2013!? - That was the last time significant snow fell here in Exeter. albeit wet. Since January 2013 - there has been any lying snowfall at all in lowland area#s of the south and west.

Time will tell.

-It's heading our way soon - say within the next few hours and notice the dark red's denoting heavier precipitation??

It didn`t feel too cold here during the night, think some cloud cover stopped the temp dropping too low. It was only towards dawn that the cloud cleared, resulting in an overnight low of -2.1C

Current conditions are thin high cloud, hazy sun and 1.5C

Started this morning with freezing fog, but it has now cleared, patchy cloud earlier but now all low cloud cover; calm; no precipitation that I saw other than a little snizzle a short while ago.

-0.8*C (DP -1.7*C) after a minimum of -6.5*C at 7.30am.

94%RH; 989.7mb falling slowly.

The freezing fog has left a light rime on tree branches and the rooves of houses, which has not melted yet, providing a wintry scene.  If the low pressure brings slightly milder air up from the south ahead of it, we may well not have an ice day, but it is certainly unusual for the temp. to be still below freezing at mid-day.

An interesting 24 hours of weather-watching ahead.

It's still foggy here although the visibility isn't quite as bad as what it was earlier on. What is weird though is that the layer of fog has been very shallow for most of this morning with plenty of blue sky still visible above that, and with the Sun still managing to get through that for much of the time.

The result of this is that a total of 2.9 hours of sunshine has still been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

That has allowed the temperature to go up by a fair amount, but it remains very cold with a possible official ice day still very much on the cards for here.

With that in mind, the temperature at 12 noon was -1.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -2°C at Edinburgh Airport and -2.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Sadly no chance of an ice-day here in north Northumberland thanks to that westerly giving us 0.1 c yesterday evening. This morning the temp rose quickly in the sun but recently with a southerly wind the freezing fog has rolled back in and it has dropped back to -2.5c at 1pm

I suspect we'll easily make an ice day here unless the fog suddenly clears. -4c at 1pm.

Dropped to -2.0c after a high of -1.3c. Freezing fog persists - rare to get freezing fog here usually it's just in the valleys.

Good luck for tonight's snow event! Will totally miss it here but we've had our turn up in the NW, lol!

Well, this is just so frustrating!!

The fog has now cleared from here and that has left us with a completely sunny afternoon with a total of 4.9 hours of sunshine having now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 2pm this afternoon.

With the fog having cleared though, this has now completely scuppered our chances of an ice day at Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (as the temperatures have shot up in response to that), although we are just by the skin of our teeth, clinging on to a possible ice day at Edinburgh Airport as at 2pm this afternoon.

Although we do still have a little bit of snow left over here from yesterday morning, this shows that you really need a more substantial snow cover than that, for us to have any chance of an ice day here.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 2pm this afternoon was 0.9°C at Edinburgh Gogsrbank, -1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
