Grey sky and temps at 2.2c, dew 2c, I've been out getting my old Land Rover warmed up ready if the snows bad enough but to be honest it don't feel that cold, if it weren't for the media you wouldn't think there was any snow imminent.

Today was probably the most '2010' it has felt since 2010. Only a dusting of snow on the ground but the temperature is currently -3C and falling again. Hasn't got above -2.5C all day.

Well, that is our chances of an ice day gone here in Edinburgh.

The data from weathercast.co.uk is saying that an ice day is still possible with temperatures no higher than -1°C all day. However, that data is only ever reported every hour whereas other sources of that data, report that every half an hour. One of those sites is wunderground where it is confirmed that the temperature at Edinburgh Airport has just risen to 0°C as at 3:20pm.

That may well have happened only very briefly which means that this might never actually be picked up at weathercast.co.uk (which will there as a result, continue to report the temperature as being no higher than -1°C). However with the temperature now slightly above freezing at both of my other two local stations, this now means that there will be no official ice day at any of my three local stations despite weathercast.co.uk telling me otherwise, as the temperature actually needs to be below freezing at all times during any given day in order for that to happen.

This has happened because the maximum temperature so far at Edinburgh Airport is actually 0°C, and not the -1°C which is reported as today's maximum temperature so far by weathercast,co.uk.

For that reason, I am really gutted because I don't believe that we will get a better chance to get an official ice day here during this winter, than what we have had today given the manner in which today has gone. Today will probably go down as our sunniest day of this winter so far as a total of 5.9 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 3pm this afternoon. On a day like today though, this means absolutely nothing to me whatsoever as I would much rather have had that ice day which no doubt, others will be getting instead (because it is always the case after all that it is always everywhere else bar here which gets all of the interesting weather).

From a peak of 4.3 c at 12 pm with fair weather, cloud has thickened up and temps fallen down to 0.5 c with a -1 c dp and the fresh SE wind is making it feel raw.

Perhaps just perhaps we might end up with the most significant snowfall of the season . . . but how long will it last before turning into marginal slop is another question. Think it depends on how quickly or slowly the existing cold air get to be moved on.

Here in North Northumberland it only managed -1.9c before the fog returned and although it has cleared again since about 3pm that has only allowed the temp to plummet down to -3.5c at 4.20pm, very light southerly, clear sky with fog close at hand. What a shame that westerly gave us +0.1 yesterday evening or it would have probably been the coldest day in my 5 years of records here.

Patchy freezing fog early morning making trees look lovely.  Completely foggy all afternoon and temp only rose to -1c, so an ice day.

Light to moderate rain here and looking at the radar we are in the middle of the band. 3C breezy SE wind.

Just had a quick look outside again and the odd clump of sleet mixed in but you'd be hard pressed to see it.

Just been out for a walk and it's pretty nippy;  0.3*C (DP -1.7*C) so I'm expecting snow.  Whether or not it reaches the ground, or as appears to be the case at the moment, falling into drier air and evaporating before it gets to ground level we shall see.

The day has ended on a sunny note here and in the end, a total of 7.2 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today our sunniest day of this winter so far and since today is the last day of the month, it will now go down as the sunniest day of this month in the overall final statistics for that station which I will be releasing after midnight on a new thread on this forum in the usual manner.

I will add though that in complete contrast to what the situation may well have been like elsewhere, this winter has actually been sunnier than average overall in this part of the world anyway (both December and now, this month have been sunnier than average here) whereas I would much rather be getting those sunnier than average conditions during the summer when I am more likely to be actually looking for that (one condition of a decent summer is that it should be sunnier than average of course), rather than right now in the depths of winter when the contributions from that towards the overall annual sunshine total are at their minimum due to the much shorter days at this time of the year.

So in case anyone else tells me that at least we have our sunshine here, I just thought that I would point this out. With all of that sunshine as well, the temperature briefly got to at or above freezing which in turn scuppered our chances of an official ice day here. On that note, today's maximum temperature was 1.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 0°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and had it not been for that very brief period (which wasn't even long enough for that to be picked up at weathercast.co.uk) at 3:20pm this afternoon when the temperature reached 0°C at Edinburgh Airport, today would have been going down as an official ice day there and that is what is so frustrating about that.

In any case though, the temperatures have been dropping away nicely once again after sunset, and an official air frost has already set in again at all three of my local stations, so the temperature at 6pm this evening was -3.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -4°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
