Just arrived back from Italy to find that this month has turned into a huge disappointment despite such a promising start. Looks likely to compare poorly to 2013 and 2014 now never mind the all time greats.

Following a truly exceptional 80 hours sunshine in the first six days, the past 15 while I was away produced a pathetic, well below average 64 hours. Poor even by the past decade standards.

Ordinarily I might have been glad to miss such crap but incredulously all the best weather fell at the weekends. Three weekend days saw 25C reached (8^th, 14^th and 15^th). Given it is practically unheard of here to even get three 25C days in a month never mind all at weekends, it was beyond infuriating to miss out on that.

Yesterday evening I left Amsterdam in glorious sunshine but soon ran into cloud and it was pretty much total cloud cover the whole way up. Landed in dire depressing gloom at Dyce and yesterday was a horrible cool, cloudy day with a max of only 16.4C and drizzle in the evening.

Today at least looks a bit more promising however, despite a lot of blue sky visible at the moment, the sun remains stuck behind a cloud.

Yes Richard I think this hot summer is mostly confined to Europe and England. Western Scotland joined in early on but it's been so cloudy here recently

I do hope I'm wrong but I'm getting the feeling now that this summer is beggining to slip away for us northern folk. Copious amounts of drizzle this morning, where did that come from? I don't recall it being forecast. This coming week with a mainly westerly flow looks like being plauged by cloud and weak fronts while the south basks in 30C+. In absolute terms not a bad week, certainly no proper breakdown but it does seem like a more 'normal' NW/SE split is emerging. I want my easterlies back!

It’s so frustrating and annoying to hear others raving about the fantastic weather when you’re not getting any of it!  So I sympathise with those further North.  This morning it doesn’t feel like we’re in the grip of a classic summer as it’s overcast and fresher, although I know heat and sunshine have not been constant during other great summers.  So there’s still hope.

It was cloudy yesterday here, and today has started pretty much the same, so heatwave conditions will always appear to be limted to the south-east of the country, and the local forecast for the next three or four days looks to be the same, though that can and does change almost hourly.

Some of us further north are having a lovely morning - 22c and sunny here, and I would think we'll be seeing 27 or 28c today 

I fully expect to see temperatures into the upper 20s for most of the coming week IMBY, apart from Tuesday/Wednesday where they may not get over 25c.

It’s certainly been very cloudy recently. For this summer to get back on track we need blue sky, and lots of it. I would trade 32C and patchy cloud for 28C and uninterrupted sunshine any day.

It is very sunny here too now after earlier cloud.
Not much to moan about this summer but yesterday was disapointing cloudy with less than 30 mins sun. Yesterday was one of only two days this month it hasnt reached 20c, which is impressive at 200m asl. Every day will have reached 20c below 150m though.

At least the drizzle has pretty much stopped now. This is one of the most unpleasant aspects of the NW England climate. Persistent cloaking drenching drizzle when you know full well just a few 10s of miles away over the Pennines it's fine and sunny. I really do fear this summer is unravelling now.

My parents live in Aberdeen and are reporting the polar opposite this post. You have very unrealistic expectations of summer in Aberdeenshire but most people I know are happy with dry, sunny and low mid 20s summers. Which is exactly what’s been happening so far. For the record Summer 2013 managed only one 1 day with 14 hours of sunshine at Aberdeen Airport and my recollection of spending the whole of July 2013 in NE Scotland in extended vacation was that it was warm even muggy but often overcast in the afternoons. So far 2018 has recorded 14 such sunshine days days. It also puts it well ahead of 2006 too. 

I’m just back from the US and it has rained enough in my absence to just about keep the grass alive in most places.

I can’t reallly moan about today’s conditions as it is a rather warm, albeit partly cloudy, 26°C currently. If it stays mostly in the 20s and mostly dry here I will be more than happy. Unfortunately the rain in my absence means that I will need to do a bit of gardening, but that can wait for another day.

I’m starting to wonder what happened to those lovely cobalt blue skies of early summer. A distant memory - this stuff is much more British.

Yesterday managed about 4 octas but both Friday and Sunday have been completely overcast, and very muggy. Tomorrow is forecast to be cloudy yet again. I’m starting to wonder what happened to those lovely cobalt blue skies of early summer. A distant memory - this stuff is much more British.

When I went outside to sit and I can feel the intense heat trying to get it running but clouds are preventing it.  Either hazy to overcast here and despite that 31.8C the highest so far so a record for overcast hot weather as these type of weather normally in the low 20's.  Better they forecast cloudy tomorrow as I am sure it will be sunnier, drier air from the continent and 33-34C expected as the uppers going up to 14C tomorrow.   I haven't seen blue skies for a long time now since last Sunday.  

We have done well today in terms of sunshine after a cloudy morning and a very dull day yesterday, and it's reached 27C too. Feels rather humid - dew points hovering around 18C.

Speak for yourself - this part of the South East has had nothing of the sorts. Some fair weather clouds but generally largely sunny and very warm... :)

I don't think so actually, the EC46 first showed it and now even the medium range models have started picking up on the gradual retrogression of the block in the first week of August (back in the NE Atlantic).

The tropical forcing also relaxes and seems more favourable for such an outcome.

No 30C even down here in the SE. Amost totally cloudy and generally crap today despite forecasts of decent weather. Meanwhile the 30C+ that was being talked about for the coming week has also melted away and it just looks like being muggy and cloudy.

We've had a lot of cloud here today but sunny spells too. Temps peaked at about 29C.
