Agree with what's been said really. The lengthening nights and cooler weather are already starting to send my mood south, knowing that this summer is nearing its end. Waking up on endless sunny days in May, June and July was fantastic, it really filled me with energy and made me want to get out and do something. The thought of waking up on a miserable December/January morning just makes me want to stay in bed and sleep the whole day away.

Looking forward to those lovely 4pm sunsets, a stupidly low sun that blinds you and miserable cold again... not.

 

 

You know, I hate the end of summer (especially if it's been a good 'un); I get proper glum because I don't want it to end.

But once we're into autumn, I love it - in particular those chilly, still days framed by mists dawn & dusk. And the transition into winter is fine; full of promise of cold and snow and those rare days that don't get properly light.

Come spring, and I'm in a gloomy funk again (especially if it's been a good winter). The end of winter and into spring is IMO the most bland and boring of all seasons. But once we reach May and the first warm spell, I'm full of hope for a warm/hot, sunny and perma-settled summer.

I have a love-hate relationship with the British climate. I despise its damp banality, but it's that same damp banality that makes the great summer spells or cold & snowy winter freezes so beautifully memorable.

Summer 1914 and all that!

There were long periods this summer when it was uncomfortable to be outside between 10 am and 5pm. Many days at work were spent sitting still with a fan on full pelt. Many weekends were frustratingly spent indoors (true siesta type stuff).

We spent a few days in the north of England and Scotland last week. It was wonderful to actually be able to sunbathe in temps of 20c without sweating. We came home with decent tans ! 

But on sunny days (and time permitting) you can always sunbathe in the evening or even early in the morning. I spent many evenings in the garden this summer and got a nice tan.

Best period of the whole summer for me was late June with the A/C easterly and the amazing blue skies.

I''l never forget summer 2018, it's up there with Dec 10.

 

 

The end of winter and into spring is IMO the most bland and boring of all seasons. 

I am surprised you say that because it is can be the most dramatic of all seasons. What season of the year can you get get 20C+ one day and wake up to a snow cover, a couple of day later?

I don't think spring this year was bland, overall. Snow, freezing cold to warmth and sun.

I fully agree with that.

Here in Edinburgh, the spring started with an official ice day, plenty of snow and even an official red warning from the Met Office for that. At around that time, I can remember there also being a separate red warning for snow in SW England. However, it was the one here in Edinburgh which made most of the headlines (at least, on any media that doesn't happen to be England biased) because of the fact that it came first, and was therefore only the first ever official red warning for snow to be issued anywhere in UK under the current system for that.

For a while after that, it remained very cold to the point where a lot of people were wondering whether or not, it would ever properly warm up. However, warm up it did and by the end of the Spring, we were already enjoying some true summer warmth with temperatures well above 20°C so if that doesn't add up to an interesting and dramatic season, then I don't know what does.

Yet another dire weekend now underway. Grey, sunless, windy, autumnal crap  Exactly what the models all showed for today but on planet Met Office good sunny spells and a max of 21C are forecast. What a hopeless organisation. It's now 10am and a grand total of 0.0 hours have been registered so far and there is no sign of that changing soon 

It's now four weeks since I returned from Italy and not once in that time have I been able to enjoy prolonged sunshine during the best part of the day. It's beyond hideous and has left me feeling constantly tired and fed up. I have not felt this bad in summer since 2012 

It has been a dismal year for outdoor activities. One of the very worst. Pretty much all the fine weather has been concentrated between mid-April and mid-July leaving just about the shortest outdoor season of any year I can remember. First half of spring was a write-off bar the weekend of 24th/25th March and so far the second half of summer has been a write-off bar nothing.

Now relying on September to deliver the goods regarding fine weekend weather because the thought of no more outdoor activity until next April is just too depressing to even contemplate. Though even November sunshine is far more appealing to be outdoors in than this rank, soul destroying grey muck and it seems that nowadays you stand a better chance of seeing the sun in November than in summer

This year was dramatic, yeah - but to me it was more a 'winter weather into summer weather' transition, which I guess is the ideal for my tastes.

But that was an anomaly and most springs are a slow evolution, through a few months of nothingness in terms of temperature and settled weather (neither warm/hot nor cold, and rarely settled for long - although May is by far my favourite month, as it often throws up a settled & warm spell). If we've just had a crap winter with a lack of cold/snow, it feels like we've just had 8/9 months of tepid, boring 'nothing weather' - temps in the 5c-15c range, frequent rain, a lot of cloud, westerly airflow. Yeuch.

I guess the weather type I hate the most can be described as 'unsettled'.

We might get some decent weather in September which seems to be a common time of the year for that. In my books though, that is too late as September is the start of the meteorological autumn and so by then, I would rather just be getting on with autumn just in the same way that I wanted to just be getting on with spring when we had all of that really cold weather during March.

Aberdeen Airport reported 19c at 1120 so still time to reach or exceed 21c. Really not sure what you expect from summer in NE Scotland to dare since May Aberdeen has recorded 15 days with 14or more sunshine hours and 39 with 10 or more. You'll struggle to find another summer in the last 30 years with that track record.

 August has been disappointing but so was June 1990, 1991 and 1995. September 1995 was the wettest month on record at Aberdeen a record it broke by the 12th of month. August 2006 was dire and June 2013 was cool and dull. So really 2018 isn't any different from many other classic summers in that it didn't deliver endless sunshine. Indeed if you read the Met Office reports from 1976 you'll find that June 1976 was quite poor in many NE coasts with persistent banks of haar and August was average but dry. Something my Mother has always said, 1975 was a better summer in NE Scotland and like 2018 it started in early May.

It's hot enough to be out and about in a 'T' shirt and looks like staying as warm well into the night as the airs from Ernesto (?) flow over us?

Any rain will be overnight and then back to the 'comfy' warmth tomorrow.

August is a nasty month of the year and this year no change after a early good start.  Shame that Kev Manchester Index dropping a lot.  If was a good month so far his index would like to go over 300 and beat 1976.  Not sure why it so cloudy today for no reason and hearing about some stupid ex-hurricane passing here.  Where the strong winds and several inches of rain as hurricane don't bring dry overcast skies doing nothing.

There haven't been many amazing Augusts in the last 20 years or so , most are mediocre or worse.
This year, Temperature wise above average here so far, ave max around 21c but it does seem to have been dull. Not too much rain though. All in all ok and better than many Augusts.
It did go down to 19.5c in my house this morning for the first time in ages, currently 21c. Much more pleasant living conditions.

It was a decent day here.  Warm sunshine at Haddo House in the afternoon  and I also got the grass cut.
