We have now entered the final month of the meteorological summer and so far, this has been a dry summer in this part of the world. This is a month which has generated a lot of recent interest because for a whole, it had looked as though this month would be much wetter and more unsettled according to a lot of predictions. Whilst there are many people who still believe that this is the case, some computer models are now suggesting otherwise with many predictions appearing now, that this month could actually just end up being a continuation of the dry summer which we have had so far.

If this does end up being another dry month, this thread might end up being rather quiet. If it ends up being much wetter and more unsettled though, this thread could end up being quite busy. Whichever way that it all ends up though, this is the place to enter those all important rainfall totals as this month progresses.

So far as at 7am, a further 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this morning whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has been completely dry.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 2.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 100.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 367.8 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 3.8 mm, the total for this summer so far to 88.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 359.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

In contrast to the very dry start which we had to last month, this month has started off on a wetter note. The general outlook is for it to become a bit drier but there are no signs of any extended dry spells, such as what we had during the first two months of this summer.

So far as at 7am, it has been completely dry this morning at both of those stations.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 9.4 mm, the total for this summer so far to 93.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 364.8 mm as at 7am this morning.

Despite the rather wet start to this month especially at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, I'm not really seeing much in the way of rain in the last day or so. Any rain which is forecast to be around in the next day or so, seems likely to be either to the north of here or just to the south of here which nothing at all in this area itself.

As we go into the weekend, it then looks likely to be generally drier right across the board and whilst the week ahead might become more unsettled again, there are no signs of any significant amounts of rain there.

If all of that plays out, this month looks likely to be drier than average again in the end, albeit without us going into an absolute drought or seeing even any of those extended dry spells which we saw during June and July.

However, a total of 1.0 mm has fallen during this morning so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning, along with 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 4.6 mm, the total for this summer so far to 102.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 370.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 11.0 mm, the total for this summer so far to 95.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 366.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

When I last looked out, it was still raining which means that the above totals for today are unlikely to be today's final totals. Although the last few days have been dry, the outlook is for the weather to become increasingly unsettled as the week goes on with the risk of further rain increasing over time as a result.

There are a few hints that a build of high pressure could dry things out once we get to next week, but that is in the unreliable time frame as far as the model output is concerned, and is therefore only mere speculation at this stage.

Showers are forecast for today with that risk of showers being much reduced during tomorrow and Friday. However, more rain is then forecast right at the end of the week, going into the weekend and then what happens after that is a lot more uncertain, albeit with a few hints that it could become a bit drier then as high pressure builds back in.
