This week is quickly becoming just a warmer version of last week as I feared with more cloud than forecast and more rain. Woke up to rain this morning. Quite warm. Dry now but cloudy. Looking at the radar and the sky, it looks like there could be more showers on the way.

I'm trying hard not to turn this into a regional divide type discussion! Its a mixture of jealousy and frustration of the 'UK Heatwave'. We haven't seen the sun since last Weds.

We spent Friday-Monday on the Lleyn Peninsula in North West Wales. Porthmadog had previously recorded the highest temperature of the summer, but unfortunately we didn't get a repeat of those conditions.

On Sunday afternoon it turned sunny and warm, but apart from that it was cloudy, raining or drizzling and breezy. We left Criccieth yesterday afternoon around 3.30pm where it was 19C with driving drizzle, and a couple of hours later we were in west Shropshire with sunshine and 27C. Back at home it was 11C warmer than where we had chosen to go for our break!

This is not so much a moan, as a facepalm at choosing such a location for a long weekend. South East England next time!

You just can't judge in Britain really. If you'd have visited there any other week in the past 2 months, you'd have probably had good weather. I went to Haven Hafan Y Mor near Criccieth mid May and had lovely weather for the most part.

Lovely place to visit when the weather is right! Love Abersoch.

Well we have the cloud but I do not know if we'd still be liking wall to wall sun?

We all sat out 'till 9 last night in just shorts and 'T' shirts, a first for my crew of permanently chilly women!!! At least they got to watch our Frogs come out to hunt!!!

Same again today, really warm and humid but little sun....

Maybe we will be rewarded with storms on Thursday/Friday?

As early as 9 July 2018, we had already recorded over 100 hours of sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank what at that time, had set us well on course for this month to end up going down as possibly, our sunniest July on record by some considerable margin. However, it is now a completely different story altogether.

Since 9 July, there has just been one day where there has been more than 10 hours of recorded sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank and that in itself, is very poor for this time of year in this part of the world.

When I was down in Hawick last week, there was just the one decent sunny day with the weather being mostly cloudy during the other days of my trip. When I caught up with all of my data for here in Edinburgh though, I discovered that even on that relatively sunny day, just 7.9 hours of sunshine was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That was only the second sunniest day since 9 July and in third place in that list comes 11 July when 6.4 hours of sunshine was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

If you take those three days out of the picture, there isn't another day since 9 July which has had more than 3.7 hours of sunshine which have been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank. There are 12 of those remaining days (those being 10 July, 12-13 July, 15-18 July and 21-24 July). Today is part of that list because after a bright start to today, yet another permacast hell has set in as it has clouded over, over time. The total for this 12 days has been 21.8 hours of sunshine, and that is an average of just over 1.8 hours of sunshine per day which is very poor indeed.

If today's permacast hell continues until sunset and that average is maintained until the end of the month, we will end up with another 12.7 hours of sunshine altogether between now and the end of the month. That would gives us a total for this month of 160.3 hours of sunshine which would leave us 10 hours of sunshine, short of the 1981-2010 July average for the number of hours of sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank. The end result of this is that instead of being our sunniest July on record, this month would actually end up being duller than average overall.

Yet, this is considered to be one of our best ever summers overall which makes it even more amazing that even in a decent summer such as this one, getting a sunnier than average summer month still seems to a real struggle, almost to the point where it would appear to be asking too much for us to actually get that.

Yeah well...I prefer a cooler day with drizzle anyway 

Incredibly frustrating that as the temps & sunshine ramp up in the SE and the media goes into overdrive about the 'UK heatwave', the majority/much of the UK has, over the past week or so, seen conditions deteriorate from the mostly excellent weather through May, June and the first half of July, with increased cloud and some periods of rain.

This July hasn't been a patch on June for conditions generally in NW England/Wales/most of Scotland/N Ireland. July so far may have had a higher 'CET' for these areas, but well down on sunshine, and we lost the nice breeze, mainly easterly, that characterised much of May & June, and kept the air fresh and clear; not a fan of this humidity.

I sympathise with the comrades from the NW 

but the media are often mediocre, idiotic and sheep like, so not much surprise here!

It is frustrating because the heat is just there but we can't get at it and I can't see that changing much because of the nature of the setup. Yeah we might get the odd hour of wonder but overall and it hasn't rained bucket loads but we really have slipped on the sun. Temperatures have struggled to get much over 20C today because of it. Today was forecast 23C sunny intervals until recently and this downgrading  of days once the days are on top of us has happened a lot. It's easy to say we will get rain when it is already raining. Looking at BBC weather, it is forecast sunny intervals all week. It just won't happen.

Clouds form again here as if we are on normal 22C July fair day here.  Not normal to see amount of clouds threshold at near 33C here today as past 33C days was under azure blue skies.   From my knowledge that weak fronts are extremely lethal than active fronts, they produce several hundreds miles of cloud cover compare to active front that only less than 100 miles of cloud cover and clear quickly.  

Same in London, total overcast and considerably cooler than forecast at 28C.

London has hit 30c this afternoon. Glorious sunshine this morning but now a mix of sunny spells and cloud. More cloud than sun at the moment, but stiflingly hot.

Nothing weather really. Cloudy breezy, warm, could be some rain, but might not be. Skies leaden.

A joyless weather day.

Funnily enough we stayed at Hafan Y Mor too, and went to Abersoch yesterday morning which looked grim in the driving drizzle. I guess we were unlucky!

It certainly does. I live 5 minutes away.  Many a pint had there...

As for the Northern England moans today - I agree. Grey, leaden skies with a few spots of rain. Bring back the glorious, clear blue skies from June.

THAT SAID - the very fact that we're not facing absolute crap now after such a good innings, is a miracle in itself. Trying to be captain positive. Tomorrow and Thursday look fairly good. 

The rain did come, in the end.

Pretty usual summer really.

The shame is that this feels like it's all over for us. Higher temperatures alone don't really cut it for me.

 EDIT: If I could bank the BBC weather up to 5th August I'd do it in a heartbeat! Perhaps all is not lost.

Saturday was looking like a decent day. Now it looks horrendous following on from a miserable sunless Saturday last weekend. Hardly seen any good Saturdays again this summer. 9th, 16th and 23rd June were all poor and I was away for the 7th and 14th July. Such a familiar story in the post 2006 horror show era

Take out the exceptional first week and this month has been every bit as poor as some of the worst recent July’s – 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2016 - all of which averaged around the dire 4-hour per day sun average we have seen since the 9th.

Last July and August were better than this

name one other summer in the past 11 years that’s recorded as many 10+ hour sunshine days as Summer 2018 at Aberdeen Airport.. Even remotely comparing it to washouts like last year is ridiculous unless you like permanent grey drizzle and daytime highs of 14c in July.
