Going down a bit now but I can't see it falling much below 8c.   Even if night temps get to zero, it only needs day temps to get to 16c to stick where it is.

It seems to be stuck above 8c now and I still can't see it falls my much now. Although I wonder if there will be a slight downward adjustment for the final figure.

* Updated with actual final numbers *

This must be right up there with the warmest ever March returns for the CET.

Locally to me, the month means (*C) also make for very interesting viewing when compared to my records 2000-2016;

Max 12.86, 2nd warmest behind 2012 (13.42) and ahead of 2014 (12.6) and 2009 (12.55)

Min 5.67, 1st warmest ahead of 2008 (4.16) and 2002 (4.14).

Mean 9.26, 1st warmest ahead of 2012 (8.71) and 2014 (8.17).

That mean minimum is a staggering (even given the short length of the record period) 1.55*C above the previous record-holder, and is still 1.31*C above the LTA minimum for April! Looking sub-monthly, the nights this month have been on a par with what's typical for the third week of April; the LTA increases substantially as the month progresses, due to the shortening of the nights and overall buildup of warmth in the atmosphere.

Despite the maximums 'only' being at the high-end rather than record-breaking, the balmy nights are enough for the overall mean to set a new record for the 21st Century to date.

This all ties in well with the general impression on the streets of this month; that it's been much cloudier than usual, yet as mild with that as you'd expect in late April (give or take a week or two depending on who you're speaking to).

If I find the time, I'll update these figures with the actual month mean values on Saturday

It's been quite a remarkable month with just a couple of cold snaps to peg back the CET for the whole of March.  So what will April bring?  The output suggests a continuation of very mild but if it flipped we could quite easily end up with April being colder than March. Has that happened before?

1989 was another- I believe March was warmer than April then. And, like 2012, May was warm.

There have been 14 times in the CET record when April was cooler than March.

The biggest difference were in 1780, when March was 7.9 and April 6.3.
1938 was another year with a big difference, 9.1 in March down to 7.6 in April.
2012 had the third biggest drop.

The official Hadley figure for March is 8.67C

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/cet_mean_2017

That is the third warmest March on record beaten only by 1957 with 9.2C and 1938 with 9.1C.

East Anglia had its joint warmest March on record of 9.1C (equalling 1938) and SE England also had its equal warmest March on record of 9.2C (equalling 1957).

https://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2017/04/04/one-of-the-mildest-marches-for-the-south-east/

The maximum CET for March was 12.4C which is the 8th warmest on record and only the warmest since 2012. Way below the record of 13.8C in 1938.

The minimum CET for March was 4.9C which is the third warmest on record (warmest was 5.6C in 1957)

One final stat for this evening.

The mean CET for the period 15 Feb to 31 Mar 2017 is 8.40C. This is the highest on record for this period since 1772.

Previous highest was 8.15C in 1997

So no surprise that Spring has really taken off very early this year. We are at least 3 weeks ahead down here in the south.
