Yes it shocked me. I just went for a walk and can see smoke. There is a fire near RAF Northolt, think it must be a grass fire on the marshland nearby. I hope it's just that and nothing worse

There is indeed a huge fire at RAF Northolt currently being attended by the fire service

A40 closed in both directions as a result

As far as I can see the fresher weather (30-33c) has reached about Colne, East Lancs, so plenty of time for those further east, particularly the Vale of York area to get some higher temps.

At a conservative estimate I would say two dozen stations are going to break the previous record. Actually make that three dozen. There has never been a day like today. The CET record is surely going to be smashed.

38.9C in Sheffield is just astonishing.

42.3c IMBY!  Not screened though so it’ll be too high, but not by much as Doncaster is 40c.

Eskdalemuir was up to 31.3 at 3pm and it's 236m up!

As you say though, it's hard to get an 'official' record if there's no 'official' stations

I don't see it having reached 40C so far today. Not given the readings from Cambridge NIAB and the computer lab station.

Pipped only a cool 33c on the south coast today. Never thought Iā€™d be writing that!

37C (rounded) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is bonkers.

The lab station is on a roof so under reports in situations like this. Botanical Gardens will probably report 39.9 tomorrow morning šŸ¤Ŗ

Edit: Cambridge  NIAB now reporting 39.4C so going to very close as Botanical Gardens normally about half a degree higher

Between 39.2C to 39.8 in the last hour so only pipped 40.1C for few minutes.  So far no 42C official up in Yorkshire, It think it very hard to get to 42C as not many Met stations recording 40C

There were a few drops as it went through, and the temperature did drop to a chilly 25C, but the skies have now cleared again and current temp is 28C and rising.

Doncaster back down to 39C. 40C is still proving a tough nut to crack, but I think the 4pm update will have a couple.

Amazingly after the front went through, Chivenor in Devon has climbed back up to 30C again!

Im about a mile from Brogdale. I’d don’t have a thermometer but I’d say it’s around 40c. Toasting and roasting  here at work.

Goes to show that front ain’t gonna do much as it moves west. Probably fizzle out as it hits the nuclear air šŸ”„
