I agree Peter, the negativity is tiresome. It is easy to criticise. I personally have nothing but respect for those who are dealing wi this situation both north and south of the border even if I don’t agree with their politics. It is so easy to say “do x, y and z”. If that was the answer and it were that easy then people all over the world would be doing it. The situation is unprecedented in recent times and we are all learning from it, one way or another.

That’s not to say give those in power carte blanche, but a bit of chance in an almost impossible situation isn’t too much to ask for surely?

Almost everyone was saying that only China could do such a thing, but it sounds like we can too.

Very impressed with the govt but they can no longer claim that "there is no money" anymore, though to be fair unlike May, Boris has never said this. This is not a Conservative govt. Its a populist nationalist govt like Trump, Orban and Salvini. Hard on immigration and crime, but also willing to splash the cash on public services and infrastructure. As a result the Labour party is now redundant

The new Nightingale Hospital opens on Wednesday, fully equipped including intensive care beds with ventilators.

That's a fantastic effort. The building may have been there but to equip it so quickly and sort out the staffing is astonishingly good.

I absolutely agree with this and am delighted to eat humble pie. I said the Chinese built new hospitals in a week and we couldn't. Well we basically have and it is a great achievement for British enterprise. And if somebody in the Government came up with the idea I'll give them credit as well! Maybe it's the way forward to sponsor the buildings like stadia. "The Emerates Hospital" !

I would put the odds of a relaxation by the end of April at zero. Johnson said 12 weeks when the new measures were introduced last week.

If they want to be creative why not bottle it and sell it that way?

Yes, I know! 🙂

I was making the same basic point. I find the never-ending negativity and moaning in here increasingly tedious.  It seems people would rather assume everyone is incompetent or, worse, setting out wilfully to mislead - for which there is no evidence at all.

I wouldn't rule out some easing from late April. Vallance sounded a little more optimistic today IMO. It could of course change again tomorrow.

If for no other reason we need to give the horrendously overworked and stressed NHS staff a chance to recover. I'd say they'd want at least a month with the pressure easing down significantly: they'd rightly get grief if they precipitated more pressure on the NHS that was avoidable.

April 30 would be a fair date to end the lockdown. Deaths should be down to single figures by then

Sadly the festival beer will not keep till May so will have to be poured down the drain. What a tragedy

Whilst I have just praised the fantastic effort of the building of the new hospitals I don't agree with calling out half truths and incompetence as negativity. Used to see this at work. New American thing. You see people putting forward an idea that went wrong before and if you criticise it you are accused as being negative. There is nothing more positive than correcting previous errors and if we start this back slapping and self praising in fear of appearing un-patriotic we will end up like the US. Praise where praise is due and criticism where it is as well.

Reading a bit more about the feedback the Chinese have given to the Italians: in Wuhan the authorities managed to break the intra-family chains of transmissions. They basically separated (forcibly or not) family members apart. This is easier said than done in countries like Italy or Spain, but it may have to come to this.

France

  • 4,376 new cases

  • 418 new deaths

A record number for deaths whilst new cases increase by 1,777

4,611 remains the French record for daily cases.
