A big turnaround from yesterday afternoon here

Temperature at Kew Gardens at 3PM was 23C compared to 32C yesterday and the blue sky has been replaced with a grey leaden sky and a few splashes of rain with one heavier burst along with a flash of lightning and a couple of rumbles of thunder

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank confirmed as 28.7°C which is just a measly 0.1°C lower than our highest temperature of the year so which was set back in June and which therefore still stands as that even after today.

As at 6:40pm BST (17:40 UTC) this evening, a total of 8.7 hours of sunshine had been recorded for today so at Edinburgh Gogarbank, so today hasn't been quite as sunny as yesterday.

There is a bit more in the way of cloud now around as I write but even with that, there's still plenty of hazy sunshine around as well.

Tonight looks likely to be a much more uncomfortable night for sleeping than last night and as I write, the temperature in just the last hour has actually gone back up a bit to around 27°C.

In addition to that, all we need now is one more day tomorrow with a maximum temperature of at least 25°C in order for an official heatwave to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank and as I write, the official Met Office forecast is still going for that.

After such a hot day today, it's now started raining here in Edinburgh as a line of developing showers has just reached us from the south.

Currently around 25°C here in Edinburgh

A big fail from the models this morning, not that I'm unhappy! They had unbroken sunshine first thing but the reality is heavy cloud and even though the sun's been up for an hour it's still very gloomy. It'll break up later but for now I'm enjoying the autumnal feel! It's still warm, of course.

Overcast, calm, 17.3, dew 16.0. The overnight low was 16.7 and yesterday's high was 25.1.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just yet another day which has started off with a lot of cloud around, but with plenty of hazy sunshine.

Last night was warm and sticky with an overnight minimum temperature of 15.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

If the temperature reaches or exceeds 25°C at that particular station today, an official heatwave will have been recorded for there and if anything, the Met Office has now actually upgraded its forecast for today by going for a maximum of around 26/27°C.

As I write, the temperature is already at around 19°C here in Edinburgh even though it's only just after 8am BST (07:00 UTC) as I write.

The thunderstorm faded away to the NW and we now have a fresh Force 4 SW wind.

I suspect a shallow Low has formed over The Highlands

Still some interesting medium level cloud development but low cloud is rushing in from the SW

Little rise in temperature, still around 19 C

At the moment, there's too much cloud around and we need those clouds to sod off if we're to have any chance of an official heatwave being recorded here in Edinburgh today.

I'm still confident that they will do so and possibly very soon as that's generally what normally happens these days anyway but for now, the temperatures are refusing to rise just now because of that cloud cover and are no higher now than what they were around 2 to 3 hours ago..😕

I hope we reached 25 C at one of Edinburgh's stations

It'll be touch and go weather we achieved our first heatwave?

If you read my last post on the heatwave thread, you will have seen that a temperature of 25.1° was recorded at Gogarbank. That was an hourly reading is shown on ogimet.com and meteomanz.com, but has been missed out by weatherobs.com. However, that reading does still confirm that today's maximum temperature there will be over 25°C which is enough for an official heatwave to be recorded as will be confirmed by the 18z raw SYNOP/BUFR data later on.

The actual reading which confirms this occurred at 4pm BST (15:00 UTC) this afternoon. It turns out that weatherobs.com only displays its data for the main WMO stations such as Gogarbank from the raw SYNOP data and not from the raw BUFR data. At 15z this afternoon, the raw BUFR data at the time confirmed that temperature of 25.1°C which I just mentioned but for some reason, there was no corresponding SYNOP data at that time and because of that, this reading has ended up being missed by weatherobs.com.

There are some interesting convective developments just to our north but for here, it remains mostly sunny and far too hot for my liking as I am absolutely sweltering in this little flat here in NW Edinburgh.

Currently around 24°C here in Edinburgh

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is officially confirmed as 25.2°C which also confirms that the first official heatwave of this year has just been recorded at that particular station as a result of that along with maximum temperatures of 28.2°C and 28.7°C on the two days prior to that.

In addition to that, a total of 7.4 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7:40pm BST (18:40 UTC) this evening.

Currently, a very hot and sultry 21°C here in Edinburgh

The last day of high summer today! Sunny, calm, warm and humid (the default these days).

17.8, dew 16.5. The overnight low was 16.7 and yesterday's high was 28.8.

Later today a NE'ly will set in and that will be with us down here for the next week or so - it means temperatures in the low 20s rather than the high 20s and a much more pleasant feel as a result. Today is effectively the last day of high summer, the sun will be strong but it takes time to build up now rather than being searing as early as 8AM. Tomorrow onwards will feel distinctly autumnal, I'm expecting, despite the ongoing lack of rain.

'Bye summer, you won't be missed! 😁

A clear night last night allowed us to see a really good view of Venus in the eastern sky at around 4am BST this morning, and that allowed the temperatures to drop a little bit lower than I had expected with a minimum overnight temperature of 13.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

That then led to a bright and sunny start to today and there is now a lot more cloud around, that never hangs around for very long any more before the Sun comes back out with a vengeance.

Today has been forecast to be a little bit cooler than of late and although yet another 20+°C maximum is being forecast for today, it's not expected to be warm enough to continue the heatwave for another day. However, the latest Met Office forecast has actually been slightly upgraded to show a maximum of around 24°C, so it would only need to end up being a little bit warmer than what is forecast, for our official heatwave to then continue for a fourth day and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that ended up happening.

Currently around 16°C here in Edinburgh

This has been a year in which the Sun just wouldn't stop shining, but today has been very much an exception to that rule here in Edinburgh as the Sun has been nowhere near as keen to come out today as it has been in other recent days.

There has been a few breaks in that cloud at times and for a while around lunchtime, it had looked as the Sun might break through yet again and had it done so, I would no doubt have been taking about our heatwave continuing for a fourth day.

Unlike in other recent days though, the cloud has been a lot more resilient and it's now very dull and overcast as I write without even any hints of brightness.

That has had an impact on our temperatures because although it's still warm, the fact that there's now too much cloud around means that it's not as hot today as it has been recently with the temperatures here in Edinburgh rising no higher than around 23°C.

That is too low for there to be any chance of the heatwave continuing even once the 18z raw SYNOP/BUFR data confirms our actual maximum temperature later on and because of that, I can now safely that the heatwave here in Edinburgh is now officially over although the warm spell still goes on.

In the end, this was a three day heatwave here but as I write, the temperature here in Edinburgh has now dropped back slight to around 21°C.

Earlier on, I said that today was probably an exception to the rule about this year being a year in which the Sun just won't stop shining but it turns out that I have been completely wrong with that because it seems that regardless of the actual synoptic setup, the Sun always finds a way through in the end and today has actually been no exception to that because by not long after teatime, the Sun had finally broken through with plenty of blue sky and even a bit of late evening sunshine at times.

The big difference with today though, is that this has happened too late in the day to prevent the day from being not as hot as of late due to there being too much cloud around.

As a result, today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was only 23.1°C which is actually a bit cooler than of late and although this still means that the warm spell goes on, this also confirms that our three day heatwave at Edinburgh Gogarbank is now officially over.

Currently around 18°C here in Edinburgh
