Line of storms had formed over southern England this evening.

Also a weather warning out for tonight with a risk of more moving up from France overnight.

Just having a couple of flashes and nearby rumbles at the moment.

I wonder if they're elevated storms, i.e, type developed from Ac cas clouds. If so the first summer type storms of 2024.

Don't know but they are packing some torrential downpours. Looks like they have moved slowly southwestwards on a line moving SE-NE as band of rain pushed up from the south.

Earlier they skirted just to the south of us here heading west then we had one heading straight towards us, by the time it got here we had one boom and then it died a death. Hopefully the one leaving Hampshire that's heading this way stays active long enough to see something, doubt it but fingers crossed.

As I drove home over the Downs, there were indeed some impressive cumulus but looking as if they developed from the ground up rather than from Ac starters.

Thunder over Nottinghamshire, now moving NE over Lincolnshire.

Huge crack of thunder just heard!   Didn't expect this.

Some very powerful and blinding lightning strikes with very loud thunder continuing here!   One strike produced instant thunder.  Have to say that I've not seen lightning/thunder that strong for quite a few years.   Heavy rain accompanying this.   Totally unexpected event!

I was looking for this thread an hour ago.  We had a lovely thunder storm with some good flashes, cracks and constant thunder.  Sky was black but we dither much rain.

It passed over us.  A lovely storm that seemed to come from nowhere.  I watched the lightning radar and saw it heading your way after Newark.  👍

Hi Caz, yes it was very impressive for a short while anyway here.   It was the intensity of the lightning and thunder that really surprised me, being stronger than many Summer storms I've experienced, even though it was very brief.

It was definitely a good one and not so brief here.  We could see and hear it approaching from the South West, then It just cracked and rumbled constantly for quite a while, with some directly over us.  We didn’t get much rain though.

A little off topic in terms of location, but I can't find the live webcam thread, so here's a violent storm from Bloomington campus at Indiana University, USA!

I doubt the really active stuff over France will, as the steering flow is southerly.

That said, there's plenty of activity pending for Kent.... There has been a rumble over Tenterden, the other side of Kent - and there's a very active cell heading this way. It's one of those situations where one area will have torrential rain and hail, whereas just down the road it'll be a bit of light rain...

EDIT: And just been a faint rumble from it here. First storm of the year!

Had a cheeky thundery shower flit through here at Folkestone at 7.15 pm, a short spell of heavy rain (2.0 mm in a few minutes) and a couple of forked lightning. Did wake me up from my pre-telly soaps grandad nap. 😂 That rounded off what was a decent bright day with plenty of sunshine but I noticed how the air felt heavy and muggy for a max of 16 C.

There was thunder here at the same time, along with torrential rain (peak rainfall rate of 58mm/hour).

We had 7.2mm of rain here from that storm - far more than the GFS' 0.6mm forecast!
