A dull and groggy start to today as our latest winter permacast hell goes on with thick fog reducing the visibility at Edinburgh Gogarbank to just 100m which is also making it rather dark.

At the same time, our frost-free horror show also goes on with a temperature of around 5°C here in Edinburgh as at 7:30am GMT (07:30 UTC) this morning which isn't even the least bit cold for this time of the year😡, although the wind has at least died down quite a lot from recent days.

Heavy squally showers with wet snow at times. Wind roaring around the house. Thought I saw lightning so checked the lightning map and there are a few strikes well to our SW

Here in the north of Edinburgh, I've just heard one massively loud clap of thunder which is incredible given that this is something which we didn't even have during last summer (the very time of year when we would normally be expecting that).

In addition to that, we have some torrential, but hailstones along with some sleet and wet snow were briefly mixed in with that which has made the pavements and road surfaces a bit slippery.

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature has dropped sharply to 1.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 9:20pm GMT (21:20 UTC) with that recent thunderstorm, a drop of 3.2°C in the space of just 10 minutes or so.

My thermometer down to 1.2 C with a layer of slush. Really surprised by that thunderstorm!

As I said in the winter convection thread, we've now had more thunderstorms during this winter than what we had during last summer which is absolutely bonkers!!

Sadly, that earlier drop in the temperature didn't last because almost as quickly as that happened, the temperature has now bounced back up again to around 4°C here in Edinburgh as at 11:20pm GMT (23:20 UTC) this evening which isn't even all that cold.😡

Was some snow frozen on the car this morning

Pavements were icy too even though the pavement gritter had been out,  it'll melt quickly though
