Clear this morning, albeit not quite as cold as yesterday! The minimum yesterday ended up being -1.8C, with a late surge around dawn.

Today it's 2.7, dew 1.7, the overnight low so far being 1.7. There's just the odd puff of wind from the SE.

EDIT: And given that 850s are around 10C, typical August values, that's quite an inversion!

BBC weather with an satellite photo of substantial amounts of Saharan dust working its way north over W Britain. Unusual d=for the time of year? But expect colourful sunrises and sunsets.

Weird weather set-up, with the NW of Scotland eg Ullapool forecast to reach 16C this afternoon, with 850 temps only around 3C, while parts of the SE are forecast just 9C despite 850 temps of up to 12C!

Chance of a Föhn effect in parts of the NW with the SE having a cooler more continental influence I suspect.

I guess we now know the answer to the question of just what happens when you have 12C 850s, gale force winds and a foehn in effect! Utterly amazing, and I bet those high temperatures up there feel all the more impressive due to the dryness of the air.

850s are a lot lower down here, around 8C (having fallen during the day), and with SSE'ly feeding continental air it's a sunny 8.7 (dew 6.5) here... pretty much bang on the late January average. It also implies the inversion is still going strong!

There's definitely time for an official 20c. Which would be insane. Remarkable day in the Highlands

Remarkable, as you say! Torro says the old date record for the 28th Jan is:

15.4°C Burghill (Herefordshire) 1887
Stratfield Turgis (Hampshire) 1887
15.1°C Monks Wood (Cambridgeshire) 2018
15.0°C Kinlochewe (Highland) 1966
15.0°C Glastonbury St Dunstans (Somerset) 1993

Beating the date record by 3.8C is just plain nuts.

Thanks Doc; I did wonder when I saw the wind direction and humidity if Foehn would be involved. I read from subsequent posts high temperatures are being reached but from the Google weather data it's incredibly localised. Just the right conditions there, then I suppose.

Amazing! Some of the 'Highland & Islands' stations reached over 20 C (Ullapool) Will be interesting to see the final result accepted by the MetO

Here in Scotland's capital it's a cloudy, breezy day, gusting to 40mph and 11 C

Snow forecast for the hills round here tomorrow 😯

I put some figures from weatherobs for this remarkable Foehn event in the 'Unusual weather' thread but I left out the wind speeds because I though there must be something wrong with them! 160kph gusts on Bealach Na Ba, even!!
