I have been doing a lot of work recently on my various python scripts which I use to produce the data which I then report on here. Just recently, that went a bit wrong which resulted in me posting much higher raintall totals for here than what we actually ended up getting.

As a result, I have now deleted that earlier post but now that I have fixed those issues, what follows is a far more accurate account of what has actually happened here in terms of rainfall. With that in mind, the latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am (09:00 UTC) this morning: 6.0 mm

Monthly Data

Final Total for January 2024: 71.4 mm (97.8% of 1991-2020 January average).
Number of rain days during January 2024: 12 (90.2% of 1991-2020 January average).
Number of dry days during January 2024: 10

January 2024 was slightly drier than average overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and the number of rain days.

However, the final total for January 2024 was very close to the 1991-2020 January average. January is generally considered to be one of our wettest months of the year on average, and there are a number of months in any given year in which a similar amount of raintall to which actually fell during January, would have resulted in that month being wetter than average.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 152.0 mm (72.7% of 1991-2020 winter average)
Number of rain days during this winter so far: 23 (62.0% of 1991-2020 winter average).
Number of dry days during this winter so far: 28

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 71.4 mm (9.1% of 1991-2020 annual average).
Number of rain days during this year so far: 12 (8.7% of 1991-2020 annual average).
Number of dry days during this year so far: 11

Note

This data has been obtained from https://www.ogimet.com  in raw BUFR format, and then converted into a more readable form by my own python script.

Final January total here is 41mm (84% average).    Most of the month's rainfall came in the first few days (31mm), with just 10mm during the rest of the month.

Interestingly, 5 out of the last 6 Januaries here have been drier than average.  Jan 2021 the only wet one in this series.

Just as a comparison, I have re-introduced the data from SEPA into this thread which then allows me to report the data for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in addition to the data for Edinburgh Gogarbank.

With that in mind, the latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 Hour Total up to 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 6.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 5.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

I have not included any data for the period since 9am GMT this morning in this post as that is part of this month's total, and will therefore go into the new thread which I have started for this month.

Monthly Data

Final Total for January 2024: 71.2 mm (97.5% of 1991-2020 January average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 55.4 mm (85.7% of 1991-2020 January average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of rain days during January 2024: 12 (90.2% of 1991-2020 January average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 11 (88.5% of 1991-2020 January average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of dry days during January 2024: 10 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 12 at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

The data for from SEPA for Edinburgh Gogarbank is very similar to the raw BUFR data for that same station which I reported earlier on, and that is how it should be.

However, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is shown to have been a lot drier than Edinburgh Gogarbank despite those two stations being fairly close to each other.

Having said that though, both of those stations are shown to have been a lot drier than Swanston in the south of Edinburgh, so there has clearly been a very wide variation in rainfall amounts just across Edinburgh.

That is something which is very rare in winter (you usually expect to see that in the summer months when there is more in the way of convective rainfall around), so there must have been a number of low systems during January which impacted the south of Edinburgh without ever reaching the north of the city.

I can't remember that actually being the case though.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 175.0 mm (83.8% of 1991-2020 winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 153.6 mm (83.0% of 1991-2020 winter average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of rain days during this winter so far: 28 (75.5% of 1991-2020 winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 27 (78.1% of 1991-2020 winter average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of dry days during this winter so far: 18 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 22 at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 71.2 mm (9.1% of 1991-2020 annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 55.4 mm (7.6% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of rain days during this year so far: 12 (8.7% of 1991-2020 annual average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 11 (8.6% of 1991-2020 annual average) at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Number of dry days during this year so far: 11 at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 13 at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

Note

This data has been obtained from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) by using their new API system.
