Astonishing that this month has been above average so far. It certainly hasn't felt like it. Did April really use to be colder and more miserable than this?

Pretty much the conversation hubby and I had this morning.  He was saying what a cold April it is and I told him it’s actually above average. 🙄

Spring seems to be so much later, still not even any wild bluebells out yet. Maybe it's the lack of sunshine more than the temperature as such?

I suppose the cloud has kept overnight temps up but even then we are down close to zero in the coming days.

Wouldn't say miserable, but yes, yes it did. I remember full well in the 90s the excitement at seeing the first 61F in the "Today" newspaper forecast, for example, and Philip Eden (who wrote the forecasts) would usually mention it (along with how much warmer than average it was).

These days people seem to be expecting 20s rather than being happy with 16s! Again, for whatever reason, people seem to assume we live in the Med. We don't.

I think you've summed it up nicely. A lot of cloudy days, nothing particularly warm for most of us yet. Nights not especially cold. Rain from time to time. All sums up to about average although the perception is worse. We've also had a few very sunny days so it wouldn't surprise me if we're not too far below normal for sunshine either at the moment.

The cold spell early next week looks like causing the CET to not rise much (if at all) overall from whatever it is today , despite a late rally before month end. This is likely to result in a cooler than average month (using 1991-2020) when we see the final figures. Also its looking quite cloudy for several days so not much cheer for most of us there either.

Don't forget that as recently as April 2021 the CET was 6.5C.

This is my bluebell record, for Sussex, not always the same patch of bluebells though.

First bluebells seen 26/3/07, 26/3/08, 20/4/10, 29/3/11, 14/3/12, 24/4/13, 12/4/15, 27/2/16, 21/3/17, 11/4/18, 21/3/19, lockdowns 20 & 21, 26/3/22, 1/4/23

These are all in the wild, not in any microclimate created by town gardens.
