Yes, temperatures that low without snow must be rare outside of frost hollows.

Everyone had a very cold night but Yorkshire and NE England it seems.

But astonishing low temperature for here.

I used to work close to St Katherine Docks and I remember in 2010 they froze over and got a dusting of snow.

Still -6C at Blackbushe airport a mile from here and other local stations reading -7C. A cold one in the south for sure with Benson hitting -11.7C. Sennybridge had a low of -12.0C to 6am.

On Weather Underground, I have noticed a -14C just west of Malmesbury, Wiltshire, -13C in Cirencester (my old home town) and numerous -12C recordings in the snowfields of the south Cotswolds. Really staggeringly cold temperatures.

Yesterday wasn't an ice day at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but it was our 9th official air frost in the last 10 days.

We are only just half way through the month and yet, we now need only another 2 air frosts between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being frostier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank. SInce the temperature at 10am this morning is likely to still be below freezing, that will already give us one of those required air frosts as that time is within the same official observation day as the upcoming overnight period and since it is 24 hour daily minimum temperatures which this is based on, rather than 12 hour overnight minimums.

In fact, we have already had more air frosts during this winter and although we didn't get an ice day yesterday, I would happily have taken what we did end up getting from that if I had been offered that a year ago when we were struggling so badly to get even close to anything resembling an air frost, let alone an ice day.

I "only" had a low of -6.7°C on my weather station, but that's because I'm on a hill. A few local ones recorded lows of -9/-10°C, which is remarkable. Phenomenal to see that Manchester Airport and Rostherne recorded -12/-13s as well! It's been followed by another ice day this afternoon.

In terms of temperatures, it's definitely been the severest spell since December 2010. I suppose the very long nights in December give it the advantage when it comes to very cold nights.

Low of -9.1C, max of -3.0C. I hardly have a complete set of records but must surely be the coldest day here since Dec 2010.

The high was 4C this side of the Pennines, a whole 7 degrees higher than yours. I notice some stations in Norfolk and East Yorkshire are as high as 6C right now.

Some pretty remarkable differences across the UK today. Coldest day since December 2010 for some, and a slightly below average winter day for others.

An incredibly cold day today. Thick ice everywhere.

The temp at Manchester Airport is already -5C at 16:50, Rostherne -6C at 17:00.

Incredible temperatures especially given it was so so hot in the summer.

This spell will be memorable for the low temperatures here, despite the lack of snow in many parts of the region.

Lighter winds this side of the hills ? Clearer skies ? A deeper inversion?

Like you say, pretty unusual to see such significant differences.

I think there’s a slight onshore drift East of the Pennines from the North Sea, hence the higher temps there.  The radar gives it away. Very still west of Pennines and the cold has been building.

A low of minus 10 at my house last night. Incredible given no snow cover. Sheltered dips in the higher hills around Glossop that have got snow cover will have been down at -13 or 14 I reckon.

I’ve been in Carlisle all week the frost is so incredibly thick. Like it’s snowed. Car was showing minus 9.5 this morning. Already down to -6. A memorable spell.
