Lol!

Actually summer nights 15-20 are not as uncommon as you seem to think in some coastal areas of the UK in fact quite normal. Now those same reasons such night's are so warm are the same reasons winter nights can be as warm as 11C here.... We're a small set of islands surrounded by waters often in the path of tropical/ sub air currents.

Incredible depth of surface cold considering there's no snow on the ground. A couple of CM of snow and we'd be looking at -15 tonight.

That what I want to see as if you get snow cover and reach -15 at 2m and if you have spare max and min thermometer to lay on snow would easily reach -20C.  Seem no one in the forum who got snow cover have spare one to record it?.  I would not use battery operated sensor as it might stop function in extreme cold.

Temperature at Edinburgh Swanston has now risen to -0.9°C as at 2am GMT (02:00 UTC) this morning and if the temperature there goes above freezing at any point in time between now and 9am GMT (09:00 UTC), yesterday won't be going down as an ice day after all.😡

That in turn will mean that not a single major station in Edinburgh will have recorded an ice day during yesterday and even as it is, that figure which I have just reported is actually now technically yesterday's daily maximum temperature as it stands, despite the fact that it has occurred in the wee small hours of the following morning.😡

That just shows how unbelievable our weather can be at times.😡

I don’t understand why it’s so cold west of the Pennines (and indeed further south) but not here. A balmy -1.7C at Leeming, usually one of the colder stations on nights like tonight. Even bloody Blackpool is at -7C.

I swear it’s like everything during this cold spell has conspired to piss me off 😂

-5C close to the Thames. The dock I live by has started to freeze.

A shame, I’d like to have seen it freeze and then get a covering of snow.

But astonishing low temperature for here.

Here in Edinburgh, Swanston weather station is now hanging on to its status from yesterday as an ice day by its fingertips as the temperature there is now up to -0.3°C, with a peak of -0.2°C at 5:45am this morning.

That is now far too close to freezing for comfort and there are still just under 2 hours to go until we get that point in time (09:00 UTC this morning) when we can then safely say that yesterday was an ice day there if the temperature doesn't go above freezing before then.

Having said that, I'm sure that Jerry will probably claim that he has no such problems in his own frost hollow at the foot of Blackford Hall as the temperature according to his own thermometer will still be well below freezing.

Furthermore, it is actually colder just now as those other stations which I normally report for (-2.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and -5°C at Edinburgh Airport with still no data coming from the botanic gardens in Edinburgh at weatherobs.com) than what it is just now at Swanston and that doesn't happen very often.

“You may kill an artist or a thinker, but you cannot acquire his art or his thought. You may put a man to death because he loves his fellow-men, but you will not by so doing acquire the love which made his happiness. Force is impotent in such matters; it is only as regards material goods that it is effective. For this reason the men who believe in force are the men whose thoughts and desires are preoccupied with material goods.“ — Bertrand Russell
