I  never understand how it easily reach 11C at night in winter but hard to stay warm at nights in summer months of 15-20C like in USA summer nights?    11C at night under 18 hours of darkness, low sun still allow to happen while in summer 3-4 hours of total darkness cannot keep at 15-20C at nights.  With sea around should keep us warmer than USA inland areas which should be cooler like in the open desert.
Possible heating free day when it come to give a break and slow down the daily usage.

Sadly, that is likely to be the only station in Edinburgh where that happens if that indeed, does end up being the case.

Well the mist has rolled in and the temp has shot up to a balmy -1.1c. The warmest it's been all day. Hoping the clearer weather to the north arrives soon.

Indeed John, here in the Blackford frost hollow everything is still very white from snow and hoar frost. My digital thermometer reached -2 C as a max so I'm confident of a third ice day!

What’s disappointing however is that the above temp was recorded at 3am, and then it shot up to -1C by 6am, so an even colder night was missed. 

Currently -3C, so if the skies stay clear it could be quite cold indeed. Also very happy the sunshine has returned.

Yep Met Office app  forecast it well ,  warming up a bit in the night, think it was as the breeze came in from the NE .  I walked two miles home from the pub when it was -5c last night with ice crystals falling. Very festive but bloody freezing. 

-5c is very cold for here up on the hill. We don't get particularly low temps, so snow is the main winter excitement which is severely lacking this time. 
Even in 1995 and 2010 the min fell short of minus double digits, -9.5c lowest I have ever recorded.

Even -6C wouldn’t be notably cold here, we get to -10 reasonably often in cold snaps thanks to the sandy soil.

Same thing happened here. We went from -4c at noon to -0.7c at 6pm. Back down to -1.7c now.

I can now see why the temperatures are refusing to drop here because I've noticed that the wind has picked up a bit here.

Wind and cloud cover are always our two biggest enemies on winter nights as it is either one of them or the combination of both which then causes the temperatures to refuse to drop and sometimes even go up over time, even during the night.

In this case, it is too much wind which is the big issue and so, we are actually doing really well just now to still be hanging onto that ice day at Swanston in spite of that.

Incredible depth of surface cold considering there's no snow on the ground. A couple of CM of snow and we'd be looking at -15 tonight.
