I am not sure we will see such an event again for a long time. Not 40c across such a wide area. Everything needs to come together for it to happen, the country is so narrow and any influence from the North or Irish Seas and there is no chance. I think the record may will be broken again soon but probably fairly localised in the SE.
Yes, I would agree. Could even happen later in the summer. The heat pool over southern europe is never going to be too far away and after today looks very dry in the SE so it wont take much
So, half an hour till the Cambridge Botanic Garden thermometer gets read. I imagine they will tweet the result fairly quickly if it’s a new record.
FWIW in 2019 the NIAB reading was 38.1 and the BG was 38.7
on Monday the NIAB was 37.5 and the BG was 38.0
Yesterday the NIAB was 39.9.
Place your bets…
The heat is quite often there, but it takes perfect synoptics to get it here.
Surely the reporting software isn’t capped at 39.9C? If it’s true then someone has had, as we say down here, a right mare.
I imagine it is capped to prevent spurious readings like 99.9 from automatically showing up, given that it is an automatically generated page. (Something similar might happen if the daily max was exactly 0.0 I expect!)
But they should have set the cap at a higher level than 40C.
I would assume that the destructive London fires yesterday that seemed to occur at around the same time were started deliberately.
The one at Wennington was apparently caused by a self-combusting compost heap in someone's garden
Nothing on Cambridge BG yet?
Looks like 39.9c according to their Twitter. Shame

Maybe somewhere else might squeeze 40.4c but unlikely. So Coningsby is the new record holder. Wonder for how long?

Yeah pity I thought it would be higher
Yes lots of 39.9s yesterday.
Was such widespread heat yesterday. Was just luck of the draw where the stations were, could of been just down the road and recorded slightly higher
Yes if we had a better more widespread weather station network I think we would have seen 41c/42c yesterday.
There was but they hadn't cut the grass so it was disqualified.
Are there any other stations to still report today?
I think Brogdale still has to , Tim S thinks has a chance. 40.4c seems a push though. Maybe somewhere random in the East Midlands might do it but tough.
