'Coldest November temperatures since 1980'

RECORD LOWS GRIP EUROPE

SWEDEN REGISTERS -37.4C (-35.3F)

Brutally cold Arctic air has been spilling into Scandinavia –and beyond– over the past week+.

As a result, low temperature records are being broken across mainland Europe.

Kevo, in Finland, observed a low of -32.2C (-26F) over the weekend.

Buresjön, Sweden, fell to -34.7C (-30.5F) — the town’s lowest November temperature since 2010.

But it was Nattavaara, located in Lapland, Sweden, that achieved the most impressive feat. The small tourist town, located 327m (1,073ft) above sea level, logged a bone-chilling -37.4C (-35.3F) on Monday, November 29 — this was not only a record for the station, or for Sweden, but it was Scandinavia’s coldest November temperature since 1980.

Extreme cold sends temperatures plummeting to 73 below zero in Siberia

This from -https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/extreme-cold-sends-temperatures-plummeting-to-73-below-zero-in-siberia/883874

If you're someone who's not a fan of cold weather, chances are you won't be taking any trips to the Russian city of Yakutsk anytime soon. The city is currently in the midst of an abnormally long period of harsh subzero cold that is considered unusual even for Siberia's standards.

The temperature in portions of the Yakutia region of eastern Russia, where Yakutsk is located, dropped below 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (40 degrees below zero Celsius) during the middle of December and hasn't climbed above that level since -- making this one of the longest stretches of subzero cold in at least 14 years, according to The Associated Press.

Outside of a brief "warmup" to around 24 below zero F (31 below zero C) for the first couple of days of January, the city of Yakutsk, located just south of the Arctic Circle, has recorded both high and low temperatures below 30 below zero F (34 below zero C) since Dec. 8, 2020.

Even colder air has settled into Delyankir, a small district located about 500 miles (800 km) to the northeast of Yakutsk. On Monday morning, Jan. 18, a low temperature of 73 below zero F (58.3 below zero C) was reported.

On suggestion might be that there is lot of mid-latitude blocking going on across the northern hemisphere this Autumn (now winter) that could well be displacing and 'trapping in' the heat this far north.. al the while while keeping that arctic cold locked up over more northern climes.

Some passenger trains in Sweden have been suspended due to temperatures remaining below -30c until at least Thursday. Although trains can operate in the cold, the isolated nature of the route would make any emergency a problem if an evacuation in those temperatures were required. Freight trains are continuing as drivers have emergency clothing

On this day in 1952 I went up to London from the suburbs to collect my reward for passing the 11+ - a new bicycle. It was a Saturday and my father as was common then worked a half day Saturday in his London office so I met him there.

And the weather connection? It was the second day of the Great Smog

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmrjwAkMveE

It was every bit as bad as stated. The trains were crawling along and much delayed; you really couldn't see across the road; the air was yellowish and you could taste the smog with every breath.

Was anyone else there?

Being an industrial place with lots of dirty chimneys belching out smoke, smog was often yellow. One of my memories from about that time, is of snow falling from a yellow overcast sky and through a yellow smog caused by smoke. Never seen anything like it since.

Quote:

It has already been a remarkable December for snow in the Pyrénées - but more heavy falls are forecast from Wednesday, while the Alps are also set to enjoy more fresh snow.

The weekend was marked by sustained snowfall in the Pyrénées, with an average of between 50cm and 70cm of snow at altitudes above 1200m, rising in some areas towards western areas of the mountain chain to 1m.

According to Météo-France, the level of snowfall in the west of the Pyrénées is remarkable for the time of year, especially since accumulations were considered ‘very low’ as recently as November 24th. The forecaster said the winter snow covering below 2,000m – the average now is 1m at 1500m – is among the best for the beginning of December and equivalent to normal levels in mid-January.

The 1.37m of snow recorded at Arette La Pierre Saint Martin (1,650m) on December 6th is a record for the month since the weather station opened there in December 1971. The 1.36m recorded at the Soum Couy automatic weather station is in the top four accumulations recorded there since the station opened in January 1997.

A record 2m of snow was also recorded at Cauterets snow-meteorological observation network post, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, on December 6th – thanks to the 1m snowfall between Friday and Monday, while the 1.75m of snow recorded at lac d’Ardiden (2,445m) is the highest since the station there opened in October 1995.

Got this 'second hand' so circumspect: as of Tuesday Dec. 7, there has been a sharp 300 Gigatons uptick of NH snow mass above the 1982-2012 average', - according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

If true this is astonishing. Anyone know their way around their website?

Looks beautiful. Always nice to see snow in Cyprus and I can only find one webcam up in the Troodos mountains that gives a reasonable view.

Typically there is snow cover up on the ski slopes through Jan and Feb so this is a touch earlier than usual. Looks like it is already melting quite rapidly though ....

Reports coming in of an historic and catastrophic tornado in the state of Kentucky. It looks to be the longest lived tornado ever recorded with a time on the ground of over 3 and a 1/2 hours and a track length in excess of 280 miles.
Some early reports suggest the light debris field (paper, leaves etc) covers around half of the entire state of Kentucky.

Just read this -

Quote:

The governor of the US state of Kentucky has warned that more than 50 people are thought to have been killed by tornadoes overnight.

Andy Beshear said the figure could rise to as many as 100 in what he called the worst tornadoes in the state's history.

He said the number was "probably closer to somewhere between 70 and 100, it's devastating".

Tornadoes are wreaking havoc across several US states, with workers trapped in an Amazon warehouse in Illinois.

One person also died and 20 people were trapped inside in an Arkansas nursing home after it partly collapsed, Craighead county judge Marvin Day told the Associated Press.

The building was cleared around 90 minutes later but searches are continuing, he said, adding that some residents had been hiding in the basement as the tornado approached.

Malaysia has been hit by some of the worst flooding to hit the country in decades.

Over the weekend torrential rain battered the country and caused severe flooding in eight states, partially submerging some towns and villages.

It is believed at least 14 people have died as a result of the floods and tens of thousands have been evacuated from their homes.

The Malaysian Military are running search and rescue operations by boats and delivering supplies to people who are still trapped in their homes.

The situation could get worse as the Meteorological Department predicted more heavy rainfall and storms in the coming days, which could lead to more flooding.

Meanwhile in other news.

The place I used to work in was recently pummelled by a typhoon.

Not unheard of but in all the time I was there the ‘big one’ was noticeable by its absence. Though in times past they do come along. I experienced some notable floods but the town of Roxas I once described as like a Western film set ‘a dusty one horse town without the horse’ is in ruins.

Houses of nipa palm and bamboo do not survive a storm but even here it seems even some of the concrete structures were destroyed. Road access from the south is no more and even bridges I thought would survive have been washed out.

It’s of course a heaven sent opportunity for a munificent China to move in. We’ll have to see what happens.

Interesting that South Korea though is active with food aid. Have to see how the US will react.
