This all went wrong in February with some freak warm conditions after the cold week, which was all weird.  Late March heatwave bode poorly (think 1965, 1968). The April was freakishly dry and cold and frosty, and May is proving appalling.  Something is wrong with the weather.  I do not like it one bit.

This is a worrying trend we are in,something has gone seriously wrong in the atmosphere and/or the global climate system. This April/May period is beyond appalling and we seem stuck in an eternal winter,it was warmer last december than what it is at the moment! This is by far the worse spring since the 1980`s and i would love to know what is causing it. I don`t like it either and if it doesn`t change we could be looking at a year without any sort of summer at all.

Imagine if we'd had a December like 2015 - we'd potentially have been waiting until June to get a warmer month! That's bonkers.

Well, all we get is: 'It's due to low pressure stalling near us and that is due to blocking high pressure moving the jet stream' (or the alternative 'it's due to the jet stream').' But there must be more to it than that. I want to know why the high pressure has stalled for so long or why the jet stream is so anomalous.

I think I know why, but that is beyond the scope of this forum.

Has happened before

100 years ago, why was 1921 so dry..........why was 1879 so cold, why was 1834 so warm, why was 1852 so wet?

We've had these ruts in the past....

Looking like going 2c below May average, was probably a good call

I might even end up with my closest monthly prediction this month, will make up for some of the poor predictions Jan-Apr, but no doubt I will tumble back down table June-Dec

1983 appalling spring; then what?  Abysmal spring in 1986, then some super spells in June & July. Don't forget April & May 80 and 88 looked good then produced dire summers. Few glimmers of hope in 2013, in an otherwise prolonged chill, right through to June; then look at July. It's up and down. Not denying the atmo is doing strange stuff, but mad to think there won't be a great summer!

With a warming trend through this week, I suspect we'll finish in the low-10s after corrections? Still the coolest May since 1996 if that's the case.

I don't think it's necessarily climate change in this instance. Spring has always been a very fickle season in the UK and its traditionally known for its variety. From experience, it always tends to be the season when the weather is a bit different to the genuine theme in the rest of the year. That's not to say that climate change isn't having an effect as it certainly could have been a driver behind what we've seen this year so far, but to act like this is unheard of is wrong, I'd say.

I'm very struck by the contrasts between April and May this year and of the same two months in 2007 and the way that brilliant April in 2007 turned into a waterlogged May. Lets hopy June and July don't follow that dreadful summer which never really got going till a fairly nondescript August and featured some of the worst flooding of recent years

April 2021 was a lot colder than April 2007 but as can be seen this was entirely due to the centre of the high pressure being further out in the Atlantic in 2021 and dragging round a Northerly rather than a E to SE in 2007

Glad someone mentions this - I've looked very closely at the synoptic charts on Look East and for the whole of the past 8 weeks have shown blocking highs to the far north west and to the north - These charts still showed this yesterday - This is not good news with regard to implications for the summer.

I hope I'm wrong - But I have a strong feeling this will be a cool summer - Heaven for forbid its wet as well. The past couple of days I've had nothing but grey cloud and temperatures stuggling to get into double figures.

Edging up and will gain a little more traction this week. Hopefully there will be a couple of warm days at the very end of the month to push it upwards but to get anywhere near my 11.61C prediction there would need to be some serious heat and that is very unlikely at this timescale. If only May could be extended to the 36th or so I would probably do very well:)
