LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.

There has now been more official rain days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during this month than the 1981-2010 December average for that particular station. Because of that, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

Flood map https://www.floodalerts.com/ gives a good picture of where yesterday's heavy rain fell

(Believe it or not, it was a beautiful sunny day for much of the time on the south coast!)

As the data from SEPA hasn't been updated since 11pm on 23 December 2020, I am unable to give the usual full accurate rainfall report which I would normally provide here and so I can only provide an estimate for this month based on the latest SYNOP data which is around 113.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and around 104.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Hopefully, normal service will be resumed here before too long.

A soaking overnight has delivered another 20.6mm since midnight, giving a total for the month to date of 102.1mm, which is well over the LTA of 75.5mm.  The wet season continues.

No surprise there, as that sort of thing seems to happen quite a lot these days even with many of the largest global organisations.

Furthermore, we are now coming up to the end of not just this month, but also this year which means that in a few days' time when it is time for me to compile the official statistics for this month in this part of the world, I will also be doing so for the whole of 2020 as well.

However, that is going to be a bit more difficult if the situation with SEPA isn't sorted out by then.

Enough rain in the last few days finally to fill up the chalk aquifer and start the Lavant winterbourne running through Chichester today (maybe yesterday).

I see the EA have also issued groundwater flooding warnings for the chalk west of Salisbury , in Cranborne Chase.
