My moan is the ice.
Still remnants of snow around that partially melts during the day then re-freezes overnight. The pavements can be treacherous.
I don't like slow thaw situations like this, if we have snow then let it stay primarily frozen or just washed away quickly by mild & rain.

No snow here to thaw as usual, but surfaces are still badly affected by ice. The “snow band” moving south across Scotland tonight is forecast to bring snow to most places and rain or even freezing rain here. Lovely.

Day 3 of rain with temps hovering between 1.5c and 3c here. Just to make it even more irritating I just popped in to the snow reports thread and see it's snowing near Wrotham, which is about 30 mins from here. As has been mentioned once or twice by my fellow Kent types a different airmass/era (whatever you want to blame it on) would have seen us under a serious amount of snow.

Current temp is 1.6c with a DP of 1.2c.

I know that's basically what was modelled but it's still deeply irritating weather

I see on my weather app that the Tyrol region of Austria is under a weather warning for unusually low temperatures. I thought a warm Europe was the reason for this crap easterly?

I would be quite happy with this cold spell if tomorrow night we got 10cm snow , which then froze and stuck around until it turned milder on Sunday. That would then make the spell much better than most spells since 2005, given the 8 fairly wintry days we have already had with some snow. However this scenario is very unlikely, some earlier GFS runs showed the low developing as it crossed the country producing big falls, although now it is unlikely to be much more than a fragmented mess, although GFS still makes more of it.

Really enjoyed the Thames Streamer this morning. Was great to see all the rain. NOT.

Useless.

I’m not sure if this should be a moan or a plus.. I suppose it depends on your perspective.

We have a cold raw NE wind which is just strong enough to stop a heavy frost and everything looking white ( though with the drier air that might not happen either)

We are shielded from the snow (rain) showers by the landmass to our east. If you go out it feels bitter but the ground is not frozen nor is there any snow. Yes we have blue sky and if you get away from the wind it can feel pleasant, you can even feel some warmth from the sun!

As others have said it would be really nice to see some snow laying on the ground for at least a couple of days.

By Monday we will be back in the normal January fair and searching hoping for another wintery spell meanwhile the sun rises a little higher, the shadows start to shorten and the clock to spring ticks that little bit louder... Well down here it does. Scotland may have to wait another 4 weeks.

Well it is in the heart of the Alps! Nevertheless as we start to get rid of our tame easterly the rest of Europe now starts to get colder !

Can I do a "cold spell is over" premature post please. Well, in the last throws of what will be a two week "cold spell" a bit longer for some. As the 850's fall my temp rises - to its warmest now over 5C today. It has thrown at us -7.8C 850's, northerlies, easterlies, NE'lies, plenty of precipitation, in fact the near perfect synoptics for here.

So what did I reap from this cold spell (and it was a cold spell compared to last year).:-

A couple of tame frosts, best -1.6C

Rain

A low max of 1.8C,

Days and days of cloud and drizzle around 4C most of the time

Snowflakes - zero.

The only good news was that the proper official forecasters like the BBC were having none of the ramping based on the model output (unlike many of us)and got it spot on.

i think this is the 3rd or 4th time on the bounce where we just get it cold enough, rain moves in, turns to snow AND - disapears from the radar near us.

I know some people have it pretty bad in this country for lack of snow... but the Wirral and merseyside has to be just about the worst place - for its latitude and proximity to other areas that do extremely well.

I just cant get my head around it...last time I saw proper lying snow I was a child. Im nearly 40.

If you have chance when air travel are better to go abroad to see snow as i am planning to do that to make up for my missing years of not seeing snow.  Got plans to go to Lapland, Finland, St Anton in Austria and other parts of the Alps when there snow around since I work from home so I can easily book it. I never ski but just want to chill out and enjoy the snow for a week or so.

It's a struggle to make sense of it at times, innit?

(although I think the issue with coastal Liverpool/Wirral is systems pulling milder air in off Liverpool Bay)

I'm just here to complain. I shouldn't as I know that some people haven't had snow for 50 years etc, but even so, I'm going to moan. When we got a brief dusting late yesterday and looking at the BBC forecast of heavy snow all morning turning into light snow for hours, I was quietly optimistic. Now I knew we wouldn't get that much snow but 2 minutes would have been a start. I haven't seen any sleet today, let alone snow. I've barely seen any rain. Nothing on the radar ever got any closer as if we have some kind of magical force around us pushing it away and splitting it up into millions of pieces of nothingness.

After todays, last two weeks, none snow event the temps in my region, E.Riding, are virtually the only ones above freezing in the whole country with above freezing DP as well and it's gone up from 2.8degC 3hrs ago to 4.3degC now...go figure...!!! this 'cold spell' is really starting to pig me off...

As if missing all that snow yesterday wasn’t bad enough I was at least looking forward to a cold crisp sunny day today.

The reality is that the partially clear skies around dawn have been replaced by fog and low cloud above 200m.

Temp has crept above freezing having only got down to -1 so the frost has melted. A couple of days ago it was looking like getting down to -6 here.

Really hope we get a deeply unstable easterly at some point. They can deposit huge amounts of snow here.
