This is the worst start to July since 2007, maybe worse with the sunshine totals.

Ditto for here in Edinburgh although unlike in 2007 or 2012 (and even last year to a certain extent), rainfall hasn't been a massive issue here during this summer. June was only slightly wetter than average here, and we had a real struggle to even get that.

During this month so far, we have had around 20 mm of rain until now but overall, this summer hasn't been anywhere near as wet here as what last summer was and even with that total for this month which I have just mentioned, that is also happening this month as well.

Of a much bigger concern though, is the fact that this has been such a dull summer until now. So far, a total of just 16.7 hours of sunshine has been recorded for this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank as I write with our sunniest day of this month yielding just 7.9 hours of sunshine. That comes on the back of a very substantially duller than average June and given that the days are now gradually shortening, the prospects of this summer somehow being sunnier than average overall, already don't look good now even if we manage to get a sunnier than average August as  we will then only be less than a month away from the Autumn Equinox once we get to the end of August.

That could have implications for the year as a whole as well because before this summer started, it had been thought that the exceptionally sunny spring which we had might be enough to carry us through to a sunnier than average year overall, even if this summer ended up being relatively mediocre. However, this summer has been so dull here up until now that is now, no longer certain that this will be sunnier than average overall even if the autumn and early winter are sunnier than average, due to the fact that it has been the first part of this summer that has had the most amount of available daylight, that has been so exceptionally dull.

Finally, even the temperatures have become more of a concern. June was at least warmer than average here with a couple of back to back days when the temperature reached around 80°F here (26 to 27°C). Furthermore, the CET is only running slightly colder than average just now. However, Hadley always go by the 1961-90 average for that and if you went by the 1981-2010 averages for that, it would actually be even colder than it actually looks at first glance.

Furthermore, our temperatures here in Edinburgh are running 0.8°C colder than average for our minimum temperatures, and 3.0°C colder than average for our maximum temperatures which gives an overall anomaly of -1.9°C for this month, as compared against the 1981-2010 averages.

The result of this is that this summer as a whole, is now also running colder than average with a mean temperature anomaly of -0.7°C. According to those 1981-2010 averages, this month should be our warmest month of the year and so, it is ridiculous that a certain location within the UK still managed to record an official air frost during last night in an era where we so often struggle to get very many air frosts, even in the depths of winter.

To put that into context, we all saw how massive an event that was in February 2019 when the UK recorded its first ever temperature of over 20°C, during any of the winter months. What happened last night in the Scottish Highlands can therefore be seen as the exact opposite of a similar event with those high temperatures occurring in January instead of February.

Just to show how massive an event that was in February 2019, we are currently in what should be the middle of summer and yet, we still haven't managed to get anywhere near that 20°C mark during this month so far.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Manchester Summer Index has dropped to 176.

The last fortnight has been rank. Frequent rain, little sun and now and then gusty winds.

The last week or so I've been getting up in the morning and dressing for a mild October day. If there were a nice heatwave on the horizon, or a holiday in the med, it would be tolerable. But there's neither. Just day after day in front of my computer screen doing video conferences while the grey clouds scud by outside.

One of the worst summer weeks I can remember. It's not the rain and low temperatures. It's the almost constant cloud cover and generally low light levels. Absolutely dire for July.

It would make a good September, Brian. I'm planning a precautionary check of my mushroom sites this weekend.

I've not had any sun now for 3 consecutive days. 3 *days*. Not good for January but this is July! Utterly appalling.

Looking for analogies for this summer so far, and I think we have to go further back than 2007 and 2012. Those were exceptionally wet summers. This one is wet but we’ve not yet seen any aerial photos of Tewkesbury or York flooded.

How about 1998? A wet June but with a short but intense heatwave at the end. Then a cool, cloudy and unsettled July which was worst in the North and West. Then a slightly better though not fantastic August.

Signs that next week could be going down the pan. This is turning into a disaster.

Quite remarkable that our maximum temperature here today was 12.4C and that was at 1:39am!

Hoping that next week is better than what the current output suggests. It doesn't look as bad as this week and the ECM will be a notable outlier but, unless you're daan in t' far saath, it doesn't look overly inspiring.

Still, the weekend looks decent.

It's a bit wasted in spring - and given we were all locked-down for much of it, we could hardly make the most of the decent weather.

This has been a great couple of weeks for being far too busy to get out in the garden, and therefore not being very frustrated by wonderful weather that I couldn't use.  As the saying goes, it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Mind you, the weeds are shooting up faster than seems normal, and I really do need now to get out there and deal with them.

17°C with sunny intervals this afternoon, here.

It's still below average for July, but given the crap we've had for the last two weeks, it feels pretty decent. It just shows how poor the recent weather has been.

They say high pressure is moving in but it simply can't stop bloody raining here. Yet more showers this morning, been coming down in a line that's barely moved since the early hours. Currently I'm under the heaviest shower in the entire country! I make that 16 consective days with rain here now, is it too much to ask to get an entirely dry 24hr period?? Ridiculous.

No improvement whatsoever here as the ghastly July continues.

This has been the pattern all week here:

1. Starts sunny

2. Clouds over during the morning

3. Rains during the afternoon

On part 2 currently as the sunny start has already given way to more dismal depressing grey gloop. Couldn't even last until 9:30

Yesterday was better as it lasted the whole morning. Afternoon was vile though. It also reached 17.2C, laughably making it the 2nd warmest day of the month. Today has so far managed 14.6C and it's now down to a dreadful 13.9C. Horrendous temperatures for July when repeated day after day after day

Can't take any more of the wrist-slittingly awful nightmare. Every single day is crap. There has barely been any sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm for over a fortnight, it rains practically every day and not a single day has reached the average temperature

Should have been flying out to the South of France tonight but instead I am stuck here enduring the sorriest excuse for summer weather on the planet with no hope of getting out of this miserable rotten country and it's diabolical climate that just sucks the life out of you

Poor old Richard. Aberdeen really is a world away from the South East of England. Yesterday was mostly sunny, clouded over somewhat in the afternoon but in my sheltered back garden, T-Shirts and shorts were the order of the day as we had a BBQ. Today, another day at the beach. Warm by mid afternoon, 23 degrees and a cooling sea breeze didn't deter me from a swim in the sea and picnic on the grass overlooking the beach.

Do yourself a favour Richard, get a flight down to City airport, fast train from St Pancras to anywhere on the Kent coast. My recommenations, Tankerton, Deal, or Botany Bay. Sure it's not the South of France, but this summer, down here, it's as good as. Will Nicola allow you down to the "diseased ridden" Costa Del Kent though?
