Yup 35mm showing on local station here too - lots of rivers at the tops of their banks on the ride home from work earlier with a couple of flooded roads too. The offroad path I sometimes use was under a couple of feet of water near Groombridge, so probably a good job I stuck to the road route tonight

Yes, a few of us saw this coming but one big screw up by the pros on this occasion.

Light but persistent drizzle was just enough to bring it to 40.0 mm dead on with just a few minutes spare to midnight.

Official 24-hr wettest 36.2 mm at Hurstmonceaux. It would be good to have an official explanation of why the forecast was so wrong

Rainfall yesterday totalled 20.8mm here (which is 40% of the monthly LTA in one day) bringing the total for the month to 33.3mm (68% of LTA in first fifth of the month).  The deluge continues. We will have to start growing webbed feet.

In the MO thread, DEW commented that the GFS got it right on this occasion, whereas the MetO and BBC didn't.  It would be interesting to know why.

Here in Edinburgh though, it is a completely different story from what AJ* has reported above.

The last three observations days (up until 9am this morning) have each brought a total of no more 0.2 mm of rain to both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Both of those stations were completely dry during the last 24 hours, and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh were also completely dry during the preceding 24 hour period up until 9am yesterday morning.

This means that the totals for this month remain rather stuck for now at just 4.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 3.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9am this morning with no further rain expected to fall here before the weekend.

This has clearly been a much drier start to the month here than what we have been used to lately. The jet stream has become more buckled than what it was during the winter which should allow for some further drier periods at times and although the official forecast is for the weather to become more unsettled over the weekend, I just don't see this month being all that wet here overall in the end.

Because of that, our first drier than average month for quite some time could very well be on the cards for here during this month.
