The grim stats for NW England and north Wales

~196 2020 (up to 26th Feb)

158.7 1990

155.4 2002

150.6 1937

150.3 1894

Staggering those figures as February is generally the "drier" of the winter months.

There were about 88 wetter months for this region than the old February record

At the moment, there are now just 16 wetter months. Incredible.

I wondered how this February was rating on England and Wales rainfall stats.

I’ve never known a winter when our local river has been so high, on so many occasions. I was thinking this winter must rank highly with regard to rainfall and this thread confirms that.

I thought it might be difficult to compare February’s, this year being a leap year, but already it’s up there without the extra day.  Those other 16 wetter months will no doubt have also had 30 or 31 days, which makes it even more remarkable.

A total of 7.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the 24 hour period which ended at 9am this morning, along with 6.8 mm at the botanics in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this brings the total for this month to 163.0 mm, the total for this winter to 308.2 mm and the total for this year to 238.6 mm as at 9am this morning.

This means that Edinburgh Gogarbank has now had more than three times its 1981-2010 February average rainfall during this month alone.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this brings the total for this month to 136.2 mm, the total for this winter to 252.8 mm and the total for this year to 203.8 mm as at 9am this morning.

Despite the fact that we are now into the very last day of the month, the latest forecasts suggest that we might not be finished with this month as regards to any further additions to those above totals, just yet.

At least 300% above the average. That's remarkable, you hear of individual stations of achieving this sort of %s but a whole region.

Against a 30 year average, I reckon it is the biggest % anomaly ever recorded for a month for this region.

Ive been tracking some weather stations in north wales. One has had over 500mm of rain this month, ontop of 160mm the previous. This coming off the back of a very wet autumn, tallies very well with your stats.

Quite astounding.

Unfortunatley my weather station decided to die weeks ago so ive lost the data opportunity and reverted to the bucket in the garden method. Ive filled about 40cms since xmas. Which is extraordinary.

I’m not at all surprised by that!  We still have 28th February to add to that too, so we could climb even higher up the rankings!

Note that none of those other years were leap years so they only had 28 days.
