It's the first month of the post-Brexit era here in the UK but more importantly as far as this forum is concerned, it is also the final month of the meteorological winter. In terms of rainfall, this is our driest month of the winter at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of both the actual rainfall amounts, and the number of official rain days.

Since January was an average month here as regards to rainfall, this month will go down as being wetter than average if we get a similar amount of rain during this month as what we got during January. If the current weather which we have been stuck in all winter continues through February in the way that longer term models in particular are suggesting, that is something which is likely to happen. If that indeed does end up happening, that could then be enough for this winter to go down as being wetter than average overall.

However, there is a long way to go as far as this month, and anything can happen. This is the shortest month of the year but because this is a leap year, it will have one day within it, which means that this so-called winter will go on for a day longer than normal as a result. However it all pans out though. this is the very thread for posting those all important rainfall totals.

A total of 3.8 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the 24 hour period up until 9am this morning, along with 5.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Furthermore, it is also raining quite heavily here just now as I write which means that the next 24 hour period from 9am this morning isn't officially going to go down as a dry day either.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this brings the total for this month to 3.8 mm, the total for this winter to 149.0 mm and the total for this year to 79.4 mm as at 9am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this brings the total for this month to 5.0 mm, the total for this winter to 121.6 mm and the total for this year to 72.6 mm as at 9am this morning.

In the end, the really incredible total of 39.6 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the 24 hour period up until 9am this morning, along with 35.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That makes this our wettest such 24 hour period since 24 June 2019 at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and since 6 June 2017 at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That therefore, makes this period our wettest of this winter by quite a distance, and looks odds on to be our wettest day of this year in the end, as well.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this brings the total for this month to 50.0 mm, the total for this winter to 195.2 mm and the total for this year to 125.6 mm as at 9am this morning.

This means that a minimum total of just 3.9 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month at Edinburgh Goigarbank, in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

This also means that more rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this winter than the 1981-2010 winter average for that particular station. This means that regardless of what now happens between now and the end of this month, this winter will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, just 5 or more official rain days now need to occur at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this winter to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this brings the total for this month to 44.0 mm, the total for this winter to 160.6 mm and the total for this year to 111.6 mm as at 9am this morning.

This means that a minimum total of just 3.1 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

This also means that a minimum total of just 14.8 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, in order for this winter to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.
