It’s not uncommon to see pressure of 1070 or even 1075mb modelled over the Greenland plateau, but of course that ground is at high altitude so it is an equivalent sea level pressure which is not quite the same thing, I suppose.

As you said earlier, it's interesting to see the high pressure reinflate after a brief decline. If the models are correct a fair few places in the west of England could see 1,050mb twice.

I'm pretty certain that VHF radio reception can be affected by high atmospheric pressure.  I vaguely remember that the distance that the VHF signals can carry is greatly increased under high pressure, so that two stations, broadcasting on the same frequency, but too far apart to normally cause any interference problems, can end up being audible together at places in between them.

I would guess that the old analogue TV signals would have been affected similarly, but I suspect that the digital signals wouldn't be.

Edit to add: The article below gives more information.  I'm sure the radio propagation information is reliable, but I'm not sure that the author's meteorological knowledge is exactly right.

Equivalent sea level pressur would be even higher surely?

The record is only 1078 and that's in siberia not greenland.

Pre-digital a few times we would start getting SW England programmes on the same frequency fading in and out - e.g. their version of Look North, though usually it was more like garbled noise and picture break up without taking over completely.
I suspect on digital the effects are reduced and more likely to be blocky/black screen on and off.
Either way not much can be done if a distant station is on the same wavelength

So far as I know the convention is to adjust to Sea Level anyway otherwise it's non-sensical.

Should start comparing max pressure readings with the GFS.

GFS6Z went for a max pressure of 1027.9hpa in South wales at 9Z

Senybridge recorded 1028.2hpa. So slightly ahead of the game!

Love the funky music for something as mundane as engineering announcements! And at least that will be eone bernefit of Brexit, no more interference from those pesky French & German channel, coming over here, nicking our airtin#me etc etc....

Got a mention on the BBC R4 weather today

current estimate is 1050mb Sunday evening which would give the highest UK reading since 1957 (he said)

Just  a pity it is in the wrong position (I said)

1043.7mb here this morning, and still rising.

19 January 2020 09:01:17

Even here in Edinburgh where the actual centre of high pressure was forecast to remain to our south throughout this event, the air pressure at Edinburgh Gogarbank was still up to 1041.6mb as at 8am this morning which is the highest that it has been throughout this winter. Furthermore, the air pressure was still rising here at that time as well.

This means that our area of high pressure is either very powerful indeed with the pressure to our south being even higher than that, or is centred a bit further north than what was originally forecast. That to me seems feasible as this did result in a rather unexpected official air frost being recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh under clear skies at a time when I was expecting to be under the slightly milder, cloudier and frost-free westerly air flow around the top of that high pressure.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Highest readings across Wales at the moment. As at 9z just about the whole of the country was above 1045mb.

Sennybridge at 1046.6mb. Capel Curig 1046.5mb. Increase of about 3mb in the previous 3 hours.

1047.8hpa. Seems well ahead of schedule. Hard to see how we arn't on course for 1050 now.

The past hour it seems to be plateau-ing here on 1045mb, well the rise has slowed anyway.

The same seems to be happening at Capel Curig which is the figure Quantum posted. It was rising at about 1mb per hour but only rose 0.3mb between 10z and 11z.

Maximun is thought to be around midnight tonight, possibly 1am or 2am. So even if the rise has slowed we should get there.
