One of the best conditions I can imagine is a very cold December day with snow on the ground, but thick cloud never dissipates, so it never gets properly light - and what light there is feels weird because of the snow on the ground. And odd perpetual twilight. Beautiful.

At first, I wasn't sure whether a weather forum such as this one was the most appropriate place to report this, rather than through whatever means of reporting a UFO that there happens to be and the reason for that is because I have now just seen a very strange bright object in the sky which is very rare in these parts these days.

Upon doing some further research, I then discovered that this very bright object is something which is known as "the Sun", but the fact that this has been so rarely seen in these parts these days, shows just exactly what our weather has been like in these parts recently.

Indeed, this has been shown recently by the latest sunshine totals which show that as at 1pm this afternoon, a total of just 57.7 hours of sunshine has been recorded for this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Furthermore, we have also had more completely sunless days during this month than what we have had during any other month within this year with the exception of January.

I know that we are now well into October with more darkness than daylight which means that the amount of sunshine which we can get at this time of year isn't as much as what that would be during the summer. However, the amount of sunshine which have had during this month is still lagging behind what we would normally expect to have had by this stage of this month according to the 1981-2010 averages, especially since we are now just about two thirds of the way through this month now.

Furthermore, we are in the time of year when the days are still rapidly shortening which means that the amount of possible available sunshine isn't as much now as what that was at the very beginning of this month. This means that in order to maximise our chances of this month going down as being sunnier than average overall, we really needed to be getting our sunniest weather during the first half of this month when there was more available sunshine which we could get from that.

As it is, I still wouldn't completely write off our chances of this month being sunnier than average in the end in these parts, and the next few couple of days are looking quite good in that department. However, I don't think that the omens are good just now in terms of this month being sunnier than average, especially since at least some of the model output is pointing towards that unsettled weather which has already made this a very wet month, returning as we approach the last week of the month, and possibly even from the second half of next week.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Spiders are the big issue in my household I'm told - HUGE ones. And the cluster flies are coming in off the fields to hibernate - time to get up in the loft with the smoke bombs.

We’ve had a lot of spiders this year but they don’t really bother me. There’s one sitting in the corner of my kitchen window that’s caught most of the annoying houseflies - I let it stay there in return for its services. It has an enormous abdomen in relation to its head so it is clearly a well-fed arachnid.

Just touched the 20 mm mark since 12 am with most of the precip in the form of heavy drizzle  At 11.7 c with a stiff north wind, is it too soon to say I'm already bored of Autumn?

It's been a 24hr washout. The rain has waxed and waned in intensity but some of the heaviest rain has been this morning. Regional totals for this October are going to rocket up after this rain event finally ends.

Finally a good week of weather to come. Some pleasant autumn sunshine to enjoy with the changing leaves then hopefully the rain on Halloween night will time for the evening - hopefully keeping the neighbours dirty little toerags away from my front door.

Yes, let's hope thousands/millions of kids have their night of excitement ruined.

And as well as drizzle potentially putting a literal and metaphorical dampener on Halloween, I see Saturday is also now looking the same. We've got thirty-five 15 & 16 year olds coming for a birthday party. We'll have a marquee set up in the garden, but if it's raining it's inevitable more people will be in the house. Damnit.

Not weather related but at around 18:55 yesterday I saw a bright, greenish meteor streaking along the western horizon - biggest I’ve ever seen by far and just by chance I happened to look out of my bedroom window at exactly the right time.

Looks like it was seen over a wide area too as I’ve seen reports from Blackpool, Wrexham, Cumbria and even Ireland and Scotland.

Yet again I return from holiday abroad to be greeted by the worst possible crap

Decent amounts of sunshine while I was away but the minute I return sees a switch to filthy depressing grey easterly vomit

Absolutely vile out there. Dark gloomy and frost free filth with rain set in

Despite being generally cold and a reasonable amount of clear skies there has yet to be an air frost which is beyond a joke. It is just absolutely ridiculous and once again begs the question what the hell is happening to our weather? when a month, in which the first frost used to be recorded routinely, is incapable of recording frost when it is colder and clearer than normal. Last year is now the only October to manage an air frost in seven years.

Hasn't reached 15C either this month so a ridiculous lack of extremes even for this record breakingly moderate and benign era.

Also experienced unusually poor holiday weather yet again as has been the case with all my holidays during this godforsaken year. Was in Cyprus and unbelievably did not experience a single clear day during the fortnight with about half the days seeing thunderstorms at some point and a total of five days with more cloud than sun

Did at least give me the opportunity to photograph and experience interesting skies for a change. The stormy skies of Monday were excellent and very photogenic in complete contrast to the montonous soul destroying grey garbage out there at the moment

Very wet at the moment. Seems to have happened a number of times recently this year of a prolonged period of rain.

NOT A MOAN..... REPEAT NOT A MOAN!!!

the heavy rain has stopped all the leaves blowing on to my drive... theyve stuck to the ground near the trees...

Usually have 1ft drifts daily on my door step... no joke...

This year... nothing... to wet to blow them
