Topcliffe, less than 10 miles up the road from me, recorded lowest temperature of winter in England this morning at -11c, whilst we managed -8c. They're now up to -3c, whilst we are struggling at -5c in the fog. Shows how localised things can be.

-5.0c minimum here this morning just before 8am which is very cold for here, as a semi-urban hilltop location.

Rarely gets colder than that. The Beast delivered -7.0c here but that was due to the very cold uppers during snowfall.

-7.7c was the lowest here near Wooler in North Northumberland, this is the lowest since December 10th and 11th in 2017 when it got down to -9.2c, and most of the fall was recorded after the wind dropped at 11pm ish. Freezing fog until 1030 this morning, now clear and sunny but still frosty at -2.5c.

Hovering around -6c first thing this morning just to the west of Derby. Quite an impressive hoar frost.

Statistics prove that the period just after records began witnessed some of the most extreme weather ever recorded. Records were being broken on a frequency that has not been repeated since.

Yes , impressively cold. This cold spell gets some points now because today is an excellent wintery day because of the hoar frost and freezing fog.

It’s the coldest max temperature here since January 2013 (and funnily enough that particular day also had freezing fog). Highest all day was -2.7C. Back down to -4C.

I smashed the ice on the bird bath this morning but it had froze solid again.
