Light rain, winds really picking up now - strong to gale force SE'ly and temp. has dropped to 1.3 C from an earlier 'high' of 2 C, RH @ 87% and pressure @ 1001mb, falling very rapidly.

Seems to be all rain here at Folkestone, despite the 2.3 c & 0 c dewpoint. The strengthening southerly wind is only serving to make it feel even more bleak than it really need to be. I wouldn't be surprised if the precip has more of a wintry flavour over them thar hills (150 m asl).

Wind has backed easterly here now and northeasterly in Glasgow. Looks like a circulation in SW Scotland. Still dry here. 1.5 C with dp at -2 C

Under the middle of the first heavy band of rain, it's now 1.2C / dew 0.5C... and remaining entirely as cold rain. It's pretty miserable out there!

7.45am, went out for a run, cold dry air, grey leaden skies with that beautiful orange glow. Wind was just easterly enough to give lovely light snow flurries, very festive and made my daughter happy on her birthday!

9.40am, finished my run. Skies still grey and leaden and still cold, but air was noticeably less dry, more damp, with wind gusting powerfully but the easterly element gone. Hence the snow had become cold snizzle!

Now very cold and wet!

Here in North Northumberland following an evening frost with -1.9c min, we have had windy cloudy weather with the temp hovering around 1c. We now have falling temp 0.5c, rising dewpoint -1.5c and moderate wet stuff, can only describe it as half-frozen droplets, beating against the window as the wind howls down from the Cheviots to the south.

Gusty wind....heavy rain since 2pm....1.2c.....dark at 3.00pm....couldn't be worse.....Reminds me of a December afternoon when I was a kid back in the 70s....hoping it would snow as near freezing....not understanding the atmospheric equations of why it wouldn't snow....so therefore a good day...

Up here in the Amber Ice area it's damp but no ice.

Underwhelming so far....

Today has been a very dull and overcast day with nothing in the way of sunshine being recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This makes today, our sixth completely sunless day of this winter and although we are only just coming up to the halfway point in this month, we are already two thirds of the way to matching the number of sunless days which we had during this same month last year, so we now only need another three sunless days between now and the end of this month in order for that to happen.

There is some light rain around as Jerry has just reported but unlike in parts of the UK, this has been really struggling to take hold in this part of the world and once again, we are seeing yet another example of why we have been increasingly lagging behind the rest of the UK during this month so far when it has come to the overall rainfall totals for this month.

This is a real pity because the groundwater levels in the east of Scotland are still running very low, and we could really do with some additional rainfall to allow those groundwater levels to recover in this part of the world. Having said that, I can report that today's rainfall so far has resulted in a total of 0.4 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, but we really need to be doing a lot better than that.

Today's maximum temperature so far was reached during the very early hours of this morning and was 2.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 1.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Still, it will put off the usual weekly night club revellers, I can't imagine anyone being that bored/desperate enough to want to go out tonight.
