Can I ask where you get the Hadley CET data from? I'd like to find out whether the 2nd and 3rd March were "ice days" on the CET series (I already know that the 1st was). But the data file of daily maxima on the Hadley website currently only goes up to the end of February, and probably won't be updated till March is over.

They are held in a provisional file till after month-end (called estimated data on their link)

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/cet_max_est_2018

They are then adjusted (normally lower for UHI) and only then become part of the long term archive

Only the 1st was an ice day on the provisional data of CET max's (at -0.8) provisionally)

Thanks. I'm a little surprised that the 2nd and 3rd won't qualify unless there's a subsequent adjustment downwards.

The 2nd will be close as I estimate the max CET to be -0.1C for that day.

However, the 3rd will be nowhere near an ice day as temperatures rose significantly on the morning of the 4th and the max CET for the 3rd runs for the 24 hours to 09z on the 4th.

Thanks. I was stupidly thinking in terms of midnight to midnight even though, had I stopped to think, I know that's not right.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I think that this is part of official Met Office standards which apply to all observations that go towards the overall official statistics for any given weather station, and that would therefore not just apply to CET records.

I think it's for consistency with early readings, which were mostly carried out by amateur observers. 9 am was a much more convenient time for them to read their thermometers than midnight would have been. No automatic logging of readings back then, of course.
