The fact that from 11th March the Met Office seem very confident - it is at odds with GFS model output.

Have we ever seen blizzards forecast in these text updates? Away from mountainous Scotland?

Hyperbole in the headlines, saying the most snow in a decade in the opening paragraph, then next paragraph saying "could be hit by up to four inches of snow in the worst hit places". Hardly the blizzard of the century is it!?

Yes, the Express are going into overdrive with even more apocalyptic headlines than usual. 😁

Remember the UKMO was steadfast in predicting this upcoming spell ( maybe not it’s probable severity) for a long time before the visible output (to us) fell in line ....especially the GFS/GEFS, but also the ECM

UKMO now showing mby dropping below 0c from tomorrow at 5pm and remaining sub-zero for the entire duration of the working week!! That would be unprecedented since probably Feb 1986?

Well they were right after all on local radio ...temp has just hit 9C ...actually 2 degrees warmer than forecast ! ...on the costa del solent.

Let's hope the +3 and +4C they are showing on the BBC app for this area on Tuesday/weds is to high rather than today's too low prediction

Hmm, as the highest maxima so far today are listed as 7C I'd be very dubious about your 9C - dodgy exposure, perhaps?

(My own Oregon station's thermometer, which was reading a steady 4-5, has shot up to 8 in the sunshine. No, it's not 8C out there - more like 5C!)

I see the BBC Weather site is showing the Met Office warnings. I thought somebody said they weren't allowed to use them now?

BTW Thorney Island was showing 5.9C at 1pm. I can't imagine it has reached 9C since then.

My car thermometer was showing 10C earlier when I set off. Actual temp is more like 5C here.

It's taken several days, but at long last the Met Office text forecast cottons on to the fact we're likely to get convective stuff off the North Sea later tomorrow down here!

This is a very wintry update from the Met Office - it's the SE local forecast, of which Kent is the only county to have North Sea coasts.

Sunday:
A dry day with plenty of sunshine. However still feeling bitterly cold with strengthening winds through the day. Some snow showers are expected near North Sea coasts during the evening. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:
Extremely cold. Snow showers developing, becoming widespread and heavier later Monday. Frequent, occasionally heavy snow showers continuing Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to locally significant accumulations. Becoming windy from Tuesday.

A similiar picture here on today’s Met Office text forecast (for NE Scotland/Grampian Region)

“Sunday:
Moray and Banffshire will stay dry with some spells of sunshine, and after a cloudy start Deeside will become sunnier. More cloud towards Aberdeen and the east, with wintry flurries. Maximum Temperature 5 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:
Sunshine and a few snow showers on Monday. Some heavier snow showers Monday night into Tuesday and Wednesday, with some moderate to heavy falls, and feeling bitterly cold.

Updated at: 1352 on Sat 24 Feb 2018”

Without wishing to go too offtopic, I'm intrigued - I know you don't like easterlies, but surely a deep cold one (like this upcoming one) would bring plenty of snow for you? There's far more sea-track to build up showers, after all...

Also, any ideas as to the Met Office's definition of snowfall amounts? They say "significant accumulations" down here, which used to mean 4 inches IIRC. For your forecast, however, they've been more specific... moderate and heavy falls.

Your second question was one I was wondering about too (and will see I for I can’t find the answer). Regarding your first point, I think with the depth of cold and the time of year (SST’s) it may be one of those rare occasions where the easterly sea track is actually an advantage rather than a disadvantage, but they are rare beasts!
