A frosty start to the day after our coldest night for quite a while, but it has clouded over now ahead of today's weather system which unlikely yesterday's weather system, is not only expected to head in this direction, but which is also likely to bring this winter to an end for now, by the end of today as milder air comes in behind it. With that, the temperatures have been going up a bit over the last few hours although they are still below freezing at all three local stations just now.

Overnight minimum temperatures were -3.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and -3.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

With that said, the latest official data which I have just now is as follows:

THE BOTANIC GARDENS, EDINBURGH (AS AT 7am)

Temperature: -1.6°C
Dew Point: -2.7°C
Relative Humidity: 94.5%

Average Temperature For January 2018: 3.1°C
Anomaly: -1.1 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH GOGARBANK (AS AT 7am)

Temperature: -2.6°C
Dew Point: -3.3°C
Relative Humidity: 96.5%
Wind: W at 2.5mph
Pressure: 1,010.3mb, falling
Visibility: 14.9 miles

Average Temperature For January 2018: 2.7°C
Anomaly: -1.2 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH AIRPORT (AS AT 6:30am)

Temperature: -3°C
Dew Point: -4°C
Relative Humidity: 95.0%
Wind: SE at 2mph
Pressure: 1,010mb, falling
Visibility: At least 6.2 miles

Average Temperature For January 2018: 2.5°C
Anomaly: -1.3 (set against 1981-2010 average for Edinburgh Gogarbank)

Temperatures and dew points at Edinburgh Airport are measured only to the nearest 1°C instead of the nearest 0.1°C.

Pressure at Edinburgh Airport is measured to the nearest 1mb instead of the nearest 0.1mb.

All Data for Edinburgh Airport is taken from weatheronline.co.uk whereas all other data is taken from weathercast.co.uk.

Since the Met Office doesn't hold any climatological data for Edinburgh Airport, the 1981-2010 averages for Edinburgh Gogarbank are used for that station due to its very close proximity.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Dull but it is dead calm and thus the current 2.3 C doesn't feel that cold for it. However, the dampness from yesterday's rain and the current 93% H are keeping things damp and clammy.

“You may kill an artist or a thinker, but you cannot acquire his art or his thought. You may put a man to death because he loves his fellow-men, but you will not by so doing acquire the love which made his happiness. Force is impotent in such matters; it is only as regards material goods that it is effective. For this reason the men who believe in force are the men whose thoughts and desires are preoccupied with material goods.“ — Bertrand Russell

Snowing again this morning, settled on every surface even though it is only still very light.  That makes 8 separate days when it has been snowing here this winter with 12 days of lying snow (3 of which had no melting) and over 1 foot of snow in total.  That makes up for the last 3 years when we have had none at all.
