Now that we are into a new year which means that we are also into a new month as well, it is time to get the band-wagon rolling once again as this has now become the thread for reporting this month's all important rainfall totals.

To begin with, I can immediately report that 5.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 5.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 58.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 5.2 mm as at 10am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 2.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 49.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 2.8 mm as at 10am this morning.

This has clearly been our wettest start to any month for quite a period of time, and the outlook continues to be more unsettled although we could see some longer drier spells for a time around next weekend.

3.0 mm on my Davis despite the light calibrations, while the old Maplin is recording 3.6 mm so far this morning. And the difference can't be caused by the wind as it has been fairly "light" and both gauges are a foot apart.

Think I may have to drop an email to the manufacturers of my new station.

In the end, a total of 7.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 4.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This morning has been dry so far but rain is on the way both from a weather system which is forecast to move in during this morning, and from Storm Eleanor which is forecast to arrive during tonight.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 7.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 60.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 7.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 4.6 mm, the total for this winter so far to 51.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 4.6 mm as at 8am this morning.

The immediate outlook continues to be unsettled with further showers forecast during tomorrow once Storm Eleanor is out of the way, and we might just see some rain spreading from the south later on during Thursday depending on how far north, that next weather system gets. Beyond that, some wintry showers might be blown in on a NE wind at the end of the week, although the weekend and beyond might become a bit drier for a time at least.

In the end, a total of 5.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 6.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, thus making yesterday the wettest day of this month and year so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

So far this morning, 3.4 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.2 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so today is an official rain day at both locations and the fifth day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 16.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 69.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 16.4 mm as at 7am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 12.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 59.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 12.8 mm as at 7am this morning.

So far at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, we have had roughly three times the amount of rain which we would expect to have seen at this stage of both this month and this year, so this is a very wet and miserable start to both the month and year which we are experiencing just now. We have only just gone into the third day of this month and year and yet, we have already had more than a fifth of our average January rainfall during this month and year so far.

Meanwhile, the outlook continues to be unsettled for the next couple of days or so, but high pressure might build from the north by the latter part of the weekend and into the early part of next week. If that happens, the outlook from that point onwards should be a lot drier, at least for a time.

A total of 5.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 4.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This morning has been dry so far but rain is on the way for later on this morning and once it sets in, it is forecast to be around for the rest of today and a large part of tomorrow.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 18.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 71.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 18.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 14.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 61.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 14.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

Once we get the next couple of days of wet weather out of the way, the outlook is then a lot drier with high pressure eventually being forecast to build in from the north.

A total of 5.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 5.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This believe it or not, makes yesterday the driest day of the month and year so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but the second wettest day of the month and year so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, there has been a further 1.6 mm of rain during the course of this morning so far along with 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today is yet another official rain day at both stations, and the 8th day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry. With more rain forecast for today as well, those are not likely to be the final totals for today either.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 25.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 78.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 25.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 22.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 68.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 22.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

After the very dry start to the winter which we had, this winter is now running wetter than average in terms of the rainfall amounts at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and in terms of the number of official rain days at both stations, thanks to this very wet spell which we have been experiencing since Christmas.

After today though, the outlook is drier for a while as high pressure builds from the north, but there could still be some wintry showers around during tomorrow whilst the wind has an easterly component to it. Beyond that, many forecast models point to it becoming more unsettled again as we get towards the latter part of next week and if that happens, this month will then look set to go down as our first wetter than average month here in Edinburgh since last August.

A total of 7.2 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 6.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes yesterday the wettest day of the month and year so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, and the second wettest day of the month and year so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

In addition to that, there has been a further 0.2 mm of rain during the course of this morning so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh from some showers which have been blown in from off the North Sea. This doesn't even come close to making today an official rain day at either of those two stations, but this is the 9th day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 31.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 84.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 31.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

At the botanic gardens, that now takes the total for this month so far to 27.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 74.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 27.8 mm as at 7am this morning.

This means that this winter is now running wetter than average both in terms of the rainfall amounts and in terms of the number of official rain days at both stations.

As for the rest of today, there could still be the odd shower around, but there shouldn't be any further significant totals from that, although this does mean that the totals quoted for today might not necessarily be the final totals for today.

Beyond that, it looks as though the worst of this really wet weather which we have been experiencing lately is over from now as high pressure is due to build in from the north by tomorrow. That in turn means that we should at least, get a bit of a break from all of the rain which we have been getting recently.
