Another very dark, wet and miserable morning within what is turning out to be a very miserable week of weather which is already making that very dry and sunny first half of this month seem like a very distant memory now. We had 4.6 mm of rain during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank and although there has only been 0.2 mm of rain reported there for today as at 8am, that has all came within the last hour with quite a lot more still to come as the day wears on.

It has also cooled down quite a lot from those ridiculously mild temperatures which we had last night, although it's still not all that cold.

With that said, the latest official data which I have just now is as follows:

THE BOTANIC GARDENS, EDINBURGH (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: 7.6°C
Dew Point: 5.9°C
Relative Humidity: 91.5%

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.6C
Anomaly: -0.1 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH GOGARBANK (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: 7.0C
Dew Point: 5.9°C
Relative Humidity: 94.5%
Wind: SW at 6.8mph
Pressure: 987.6mb, falling
Visibility: 5.6 miles

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.6°C
Anomaly: +0.2 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH AIRPORT (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: 7°C
Dew Point: 6°C
Relative Humidity: 95.0%
Wind: WSW at 8.1mph
Visibility: 9.0 miles

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.1°C
Anomaly: -0.3 (set against 1981-2010 average for Edinburgh Gogarbank)

Temperatures and dew points at Edinburgh Airport are measured only to the nearest 1°C instead of the nearest 0.1°C.

Since the Met Office doesn't hold any climatological data for Edinburgh Airport, the 1981-2010 averages for Edinburgh Gogarbank are used for that station due to its very close proximity.

Brightening up nicely with the sun breaking through after a rather cloudy start.

I've just popped out to put some rubbish in the bin and the current 13.8 C is already feeling quite balmy.

As I look out, the rain is still hammering down here. In fact, it is hard to believe that we only had 0.2 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank at 8am this morning, since that total has now jumped up to 4.4 mm (and rising, as it is still raining) as at midday. That is now just 0.2 mm less than the overall total for yesterday and since we have also had quite a bit of rain during the last half an hour or so, we are easily going to overtake that total within the next hour if we haven't done so already. This then leaves us needing another 2.0 mm of rain during the rest of today, for today to end up being our wettest day of the month so far and with the way that it's looking just now, that now appears to be inevitable.

The temperature also hasn't gone up at all today and at 12 noon, it was 6.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. So overall, it is a fairly chilly day and after turning down my central heating last night because it was mild, it wasn't long afterwards that I then had to turn my central heating back up again as that colder air came back at us (as has now been shown by the fact that the wind has now once again, coming from the NE).

Furthermore, it is also still fairly dark here despite it being the middle of the day, and that means that I still have my house lights switched on. That wouldn't normally be such a big issue at other times of the year. However, we are now less than a month away from the winter solstice which means that we are entering that time of year when overcast days such as what we have today, commonly fail to ever get completely light all day due to the very low angle of the midday Sun at this time of year. So, this is us now starting to see the effect of that.

This is just a quick update to confirm that today is indeed, our wettest day of this month so far as 2.2 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank just in that single hour alone, between 12 noon and 1pm this afternoon. That then takes today's total so far, up to 6.6 mm which has not only overtaken yesterday's total of 4.6 mm, but also overtaken Monday's total of 6.4 mm which until today, had been this month's highest total so far. I did say over on the precipitation watch thread that today's total could trump the totals from the previous two days, and that has now ended up happening. Now, it is just a matter of waiting to see what that final total for today will end up being but if this keeps up, that final total might be one which would then be very hard to beat during the rest of the month.

Yes, this is starting to show a few shades of the winter of 2015/16 here. The only thing missing from that jigsaw would be a little bit of flooding in the Scottish Borders around Hawick and since that is where my parents live, I don't think that they would be too impressed if that happened. Having said that though, the winter of 2015/16 was also a lot milder than what we are seeing just now with December 2015 in particular, being the mildest December on record to date.

For here though, we have now had 9.8 mm of rain today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this evening. In comparison to what we have been used to recently, that is still quite a lot by our recent standards here in Edinburgh. However, there are signs now that this rain seems to be clearing away to the SE which means that we might not get much more today than what we have just now unless a wave-like disturbance along that weather front brings that rain back towards us again. If that doesn't happen though, it will mean that the forecasts have actually been a bit over-pessimistic in terms of the length of time that this rain was expected to be hanging around here for and if that is the case, we might be onto that drier trend of weather from tomorrow onwards after all.

At the moment, the pressure is still very low at 981.4mb at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm, and that in itself tells us that it has been a very deep low pressure system which has brought all of that rain. However, the pressure appears to have finally stopped falling, so that at least is a positive sign. Nevertheless, this has now been our third day in a row with no sunshine at all being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank and even by our own Scottish standards at this time of year, that is very poor fare indeed. On the temperature front, it is currently 5.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
