Currently here in Dover the monthly mean is  18.2c.

Certainly July is going to be another warmer than the l.t.a. month, to add to June.

Taking CET figures then, one of the warmer summers in the long term record based on the first 2 months, if there are any statos around it would be interesting to see where June and July taken together ranks temperature-wise compared to existing records.

Despite the cooler weather of the past couple of weeks the first two months of this summer will be one of the warmest in the CET series. Mean temperature for the first two months probably close to 16.5C.

Warmer years since 1950 are:

1976 17.85C
1983 16.95C
2003 16.85C
2006 17.80C

August thread coming up shortly.

Sorry couldn't quote GW's last post dont know why...

Hard to believe this summer has been so good so far...in the North West we've had a few nice days but that's it. The North/South weather divide is really taking hold

Last really hot sticky month here (Preston) was July 2006. August 2003 was simply belting. July 2013 here was consistently warm but not really hot.

As a child then living in south Cumbria, July 1983 and 1984 were hot. Summer 1976 beat them all.

As an adult, apart from the above, the hottest UK weather I ever experienced was August 1995 when I live in Essex. Incredible overnight heat. Windows wide open, no duvet, no clothes night after night....you get the picture

As I suspected, a very warm summer up to this point from a C E T perspective. The 5th warmest in a very long record.  Impressive.  From a far south east coast, local perspective, probably the best summer up to this point, in my view, not withstanding some average / wetter/ cooler conditions since 21st July.

That's why you shouldn't base on how good a summer is wholly on temperatures. Rain days and sunshine amounts have to be considered as well. For instance, August 2008 had a CET of 16.2C which doesn't sound bad compared to say August 2014 which was 14.9C but it was diabolical. The max temperatures were suppressed, it was extremely cloudy and frequent rain.

Still got August to go but in reality, it hasn't been a good summer overall.

With weather, 'reality' is location dependent.

In my location Summer 2017 has been very good in terms of sunshine and temperature, which are the two most critical criteria in my view.

It remains to be seen whether August can bring an upturn in the recent conditions which have seen a considerable deterioration compared to what preceded them.

Just before GW posts his tables, here are some maps from July 2017.  The first map shows actual sunshine hours - ranging from a  respectable 240+ hours on the Kent and East Sussex (pretty much average for here) coast to around 100 in parts of central Scotland.

Here is the temperature anomaly map for daytime maxima: Generally average in Wales and England away from the far north, and notably better than average in SE Kent (for the second month in a row); and in far NW Scotland.

Of less importance- just worked out my mean for the month:18.6C; this is largely due to warm nights, even in the unsettled spells.

Here are the charts for July. After a very warm start it was chilly in the final 12 days meaning overall an average month.
