I know the anomalously cool start to the month was the nail in the coffin for anything average or above, but I guess I was a bit tame with my prediction on that basis

Ironically, my local mean seems to be heading for a finish at somewhere between 13.1*C and 13.3*C. Though even if the CET was doing the same, it's not like I can finish very high up the table this year anyway

It's been a funny month hasn't it?

I remember September 93 and 94, the last time we had CET's like this, as being really cold, overcast and very wet months with flooding rains at times.

This month hasn't felt like that and I would guess much of this coolness has come from cold minima?

Aye, not really felt cool.  And it's been quite dry in many parts - only 50% average rainfall here.   I suspect the sunshine figures will be pretty good too.

But I bet the trend for negative CETs doesn't last much longer ....

Yes, it's been a pleasant month here too, although I guess the low night temps have held down the mean.

I have overcooked the temps this month and expect a fair old slide down the table.  My run of good guesses had to end!

Latest estimate for the final September CET is 12.48C. We could be very close to finishing at the same figure as 1993.

Like has been said, much of it down to consistently cool minima. Saying that, I bet if we'd have just had an august like 2003, we'd probably be thinking this September had been decidedly chilly.

Correct. Here we have had consecutive nights below 10C since this month started, quite a number have been below 5C, no air frost though. Not had a nightime/morning min temp of 10C or above since 31st August. Looks like this will carry on into October.

Yes the anomaly for the minimum temperature is more than double that for the maximum this month.

Using the 1971-2000 data as a benchmark the maximum CET is 0.8C below average this month. The minimum is a rather large 1.7C below average.

Who wouldn't prefer an average made from a daytime max of 20 and a sunrise temp of about 4 when compared to a constant 24hr clag of 10-13C? Got that in edinburgh yesterday and made the top 10 lists for both max and min temperature on the met office site. Very nice.

Well we have all the final figures for September except the minimum CET for the 25th which is preventing Hadley from publishing a final overall mean figure. Nevertheless I can give you a figure that is virtually the final number by using the provisional reading for the minimum on the 25th combined with the final figures for all other dates.

The provisional CET mean finished at 12.94C. As expected the final figure is much lower after adjustments but not as low as I was thinking it might be.

The final CET comes in at 12.66C. It is possible this might move by 1/100th of a degree in either direction once the minimum for the 25th is confirmed but no more than that. This makes September 2015 the coldest since 1993 when the CET was 12.4C. September 1994 had a CET of 12.75C so 2015 is slightly cooler.

The minimum CET is 1.60C below the 1971-2000 mean and is the coldest since 1986 (incidentally 1986 is the coldest figure in the whole series since 1878). The September 2015 minimum is the equal 10th coldest in the series.

One other stat for you. Nowhere in the whole UK saw 25C in September. Incredibly the warmest day was the last day of the month when Braemar in the Highlands recorded 24.0C. Highest temperature in England was at Writtle on the 12th with 23.0C.

Braemar also recorded the lowest minimum of the month with -1.3C on the 30th giving a massive diurnal range of 25.3C. An air frost was recorded somewhere in the UK on 5 days in September.

springsunshine wins the competition this month with the closest prediction (12.70C) to the final figure. Congratulations
