I think the potential colder snap/spell at the end of the month is going to come too late for Gusty...

Reckon so Saint frown.

The CET will probably sit close to 5.2c or 5.3c by the time the cool down starts on the 24th or 25th.

It would have to be a potent cold final week to then drop the CET by 1.4c for my victory.

Possible..but unlikely. Interesting all the same.

I think at least a couple of the CET measures will jump into positive territory tomorrow, staying that way until Christmas eve. Depending on the harshness of frosts around Christmas and general situation thereafter, I don't think it'll be outside the -0.5 to +0.5 anomaly range in the end. Temp wise there won't be much to characterise the month as anything other than 'close to average'.

Some exceptionally mild days coming up which may, all by themselves, be enough to secure a new annual CET record, even if we were to get a final week averaging near zero, which itself is at the cold end of possibilities currently on offer.

I'm hoping we get at least one spell of (ideally lying) snow down here as it would be great fun to achieve a new CET record having just seen such conditions

On the other hand, 2014 is very close to being a completely snowless year here, which would be a very rare event, perhaps even unprecedented.

The provisional CET for 18th was 11.9 - hence even the monthly mean jumped by 0.4 in 1 day - unusual for this far through the month

I make that the warmest December day for 14 years since 12/12/2000

With warmth pre Xmas and potential cold post Christmas I think I could be looking reasonably OK for once this month!

I have often seen satellite imagery following snow events where it fades away as you head south from here.

The reduction falls/depths often starts from around Salisbury Plain southward, so I usually only get to experience a few cm.

The CET mean of 11.8C for the 18th is a date record beating 11.4C set in 1932.

It is also the joint 14th warmest December mean on record since 1772

Warmest December mean ever was 12.9C on 12 December 1994

A very mixed bag expected between now and the end of the year. Today and tomorrow temperatures will be slightly above average. Then Monday and Tuesday will be very mild. Cooler on Christmas Eve but still mild. Christmas Day looks seasonal with temperatures close to average. Boxing Day could be really quite chilly though. Next weekend it turns a little milder as the next Atlantic low moves across but the final three days of the year could be quite chilly.

The current Hadley provisional mean looks to be far too high based on my calculations. But even using my data I expect this month to finish up a little milder than average.

0.9C?

The rest of the year needs to be at least 3.26C colder than average to prevent 2014 taking the record...
