Unless you support Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs I would imagine the remaining 99% of England couldn't really give a toss if they win or not, but will watch it because it's a game of football on the box, whereas the WC brings a nation behind the same cause, although I admit that my interest in all things England football related is shallow at best

Well judging by the reaction to the Turkish crowd at tonight's game they seem to have thought they'd just won the World Cup.  And the Nobel Prize.  And the State Lottery ........    Seriously - nice to see a crowd so pationately behind their team in defeat, instead of walking out 10 minutes before the end .....

I have to say that was a great performance by Spurs tonight, especially Bale. It's a great shame that he'll never play in a major international tournament.

Nope, unfortunately he was born in Wales. He would walk into the England team.

In many ways the best player for Spurs this evening was Modric. Forget about the goal he set up, he was excellent at dispossessing Inter in midfield.

Regards performance do players in general play better for their club or country......invariably it's their club. What produces better entertainment for the TV viewer, generally pulsating matches from the CL on a regular basis or a volume of rather sub standard matches in the WC ? As an extravaganza the WC takes the honours, but IMO for pure quality the CL is the better competition..............all about opinions I guess

I'm sure there would be far more people in Italy and New Zealand that would rather watch that game than Spurs and Inter fans watch the game you highlight.

Fact is the WC is far bigger, far better and carries far more prestige. Ask anyone outside Europe, or to be more precise the fans of the few clubs in the CL how important the CL is to them compared to the WC.

Bigger yes, better no, more prestige yes. The problem with the World Cup is that there are too many crap games, because there are too many pi$$poor teams in it such as England. But seriously, the idea of watching Italy vs New Zealand, Algeria vs USA would fill me with dread. My fears were realised. I reckon Hapoel Tel Aviv could have beaten some of the teams at this year's World Cup. I also hate the marketing aspects of the World Cup and the politically correct crap that Africa should have been awarded it because it was Africa's time. Why? Most African fans support CL teams and couldn't give a toss.

Hi John. I don't see them winning anything this year, and if you look back preseason I tipped them to win the league. I think the Rooney debacle will have an underlying effect on the players. You can't tell me they all love him after what's happened, and now he's earning more than double what they are for throwing his toys out of the pram.

Maybe I'll be wrong, but right now I think they're a team in decline

Fair points there Matty........the fact remains of course that although they haven't won as many matches as they should have done they're the only top flight side yet to be beaten this year. I'll stick by my guns.......if they are there or thereabouts come the end of December and buy a couple of quality midfielders plus an heir apparent to VDS during the January transfer window, they'll be the best side in the Premiership......... frankly that's not unrealistic either..... we'll see

''Asked about Bale once again making mincemeat of Brazil international Maicon, Benitez replied: "Maicon is a very good offensive defender.

"He has more problems when players play like Bale, so we had to help him."

Hmmm, so basically the much touted 'world's best RB' can't defend. I think the Spanish waiter needs therapy. And quick.

Some interesting points regarding CL v WC......I am quite split over which is best CL probably has better quality matches but i enjoy the WC equally. Anyhow.... Fantastic result for Spurs sets them up with a great chance to qualify from a tight group . Man U overcome the Turks but Rangers fall at Valencia and that result may well haunt them in their quest for champs league progression, however Rangers fans will be happy to play Europa league after xmas !!

LMAO!! at the ridiculous hype around Bale this morning. Just been listening to Mike "I'm fat and like to mention it a lot" Parry on TalkShat and he reckons Bale is one of the worlds top 3 players! WTF??? this is a player who could barely get a game a year ago. He has two good games against a defender who's best attribute is attacking and all of a sudden he's Messi. He generally has his backside handed to him on a plate in the Prem most weeks. Have a day off
