Its a hard one to call, Anglian Trains cancelled over 100 services the other day because they were advised by the MetO that huge amounts of snow were coming- and what happened? A complete vault face- many people furious that they couldn't get to work when not a single flake of snow had fallen in some of the service areas. My kids were sent home today from school- because we had light snow all morning and the head teacher saw that the area had been upgraded to amber warning for this afternoon. What happened? Light snow flurries and a general melt of the snow, a complete waste of parents and pupils time. Its easy with hindsight though

Im a veteran of a number of severe winters and this spell is up there with the best is terms of cold and (for some) snow. As for tomorrow, looking at all available data I think it’s a decent call to announce closures as it ‘could’ get dicey in the afternoon and especially Soton west. Pompey will be dry and sunny though (😉)

And I remember one for the London area for the snow of February 2009. But maybe the definition of a red warning was slightly different prior to 2011?

Do the presenters get a bonus if they finish a report with "there's more on the " or "it's only going to get worse". Only they trot this out whether it's true or not. On tonight's BBC News talking about the overnight snow in London they said it was going to be even worse tonight with more heavy snow forecast. Well yes for Scotland but London is only right on the edge of the Yellow warning. No wonder the public get confused.

But then mentioned freezing rain so hope this comes off and ends Exeter's snow drought.

Unsurprisingly, the Met Office has extended the yellow warning in the South East westwards.

The one for now? Certainly more snow west of London than I was expecting tonight. 

It's an extension of the existing one, which expires just before midnight.

Seems to fit in with the model output and warning areas to be honest: the heaviest stuff will be west of the IOW at least initially. Although having said that my local forecast here has heavy snow from 9am to 3pm (Sandhurst hourly forecast on Met Office).

it looked better for Friday...as always being pushed back 24 hours for our location...have to agree with others on the graphics...simply appalling and virtually impossible to distinguish beteeen cloud and light snow..I have interpreted this as we may get some snow flurries here on and off during the day ...probably amounting to a mm or so

Which model output? There appears zero agreement on where the snow will go so I doubt it will be accurate at all. 

The charts I've looked at over the past day or so (GFS, WRF, Euro4, ICON) have varied in the detail but all have shown the most snow lying in the SW and up through Wales (and Ireland), with moderate totals of 5-10cm  into central southern England, more to the west than the east. Having said that most of those charts started me off tomorrow morning with zero, and it must be approaching 5cm already out there. 

I agree that the heaviest and most persistent snow will be to the West, but I found the way they were representing what might happen to the East as a bit odd. We'll see in the morning.

My children's school has delayed the start of the school day to assess the situation.  They may be being over precautious .

Thanks to the Met Office: - If this comes about then it will definitely be worth the wait for the snow starved Exeter region.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:
Windy on Friday, with further snow in places. Lighter winds over the weekend and a little less cold, but still the risk of some snow, rain and ice.
