Suprised no one has mentioned the wording for the yellow warning for Friday/Saturday for England/Wales/NOrthern Ireland:

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Further spells of snow could continue to move north through Friday and into Saturday, with the potential to produce widespread snow, accompanied by strong winds - although the winds will tend to ease a little through Friday. This warning has been updated to bring the southern boundary south to reflect uncertainty in the timing of less cold air arriving in the south, which could be delayed, and the possibility for further spells of snow to arrive from the south later. The end time has been extended to the end of Saturday to cater for these too. The northern boundary has also been adjusted north slightly

BBC Scotland is almost encouraging people to question the warnings - there is a general feeling of disbelief that this is anything more than a late winter event of little significance.  If the Red warning is issued and there is not 25-40cm other than the favoured spots at elevation then all credibility is "oot the windae"

There was similar scoffing in some quarters before today's Amber down here - and boy, did that deliver. Things are mostly back to normal on the roads now, but Medway is still a mass of red on Google.

Hopefully people will take note of the warnings up there, although they may be wrong at times they're issued for good reason!

The one and only time I have been under a red warning was in Jan 2010 and it was certainly justified. Twelve hours of non-stop heavy snow bringing close to a foot of level snow in lowland Hampshire. I guess Scots are made of tougher stuff so a red might need more than that!

UK Outlook for Sunday 4 Mar 2018 to Tuesday 13 Mar 2018:

Further rain, sleet or snow is expected next Sunday and into Monday, as an area of low pressure moves north across the UK with showers following. Northern parts are likely to see the snow, whereas rain or sleet is more likely further south. It will stay very cold across the UK, with brisk winds in the north. During the following week, and into mid-March it is likely to stay cold in the north, but temperatures could return nearer normal in the south, making it less cold here than recent days. It is likely to be unsettled through the week, with rain and strong winds across the country, perhaps turning to snow across central and northern parts. The best chance of drier conditions will be in the far north and northwest.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 14 Mar 2018 to Wednesday 28 Mar 2018:

The easterly wind is likely to persist, with colder than average conditions in the north, but it may be a little milder at times in the south and southwest of the UK. There will continue to be a risk of snow across some central and northern areas, but in the far north and northwest it should be drier. Frost and ice will continue to be widespread and severe in places. As we head towards the middle of March it may turn more unsettled and less cold with milder and wetter weather spreading up from the south or southwest. This may lead to further significant snow in places although this remains very uncertain. Northern areas may hang on to the colder weather well into March.

I can't ever remember an amber warning for wintry weather every delivering anything for my neck of the woods. A constant yellow warning for the last few days has only resulted in a maximum snow depth of 1cm before it melted within an hour, and we have done better than a lot of people commenting on social media about "where is the snow?". We were in an amber alert area until about 12 to 18 hours before the "event" if that's what you can call it here. 

The BBC weather just before 1pm had a good area of NE England and Eastern Scotland on Amber alert for tomorrow. Could be quite tricky up there if this beast finally gets its act together 

I totally agree with you there, i dont think many people up here take any notice of warnings any more, as so often they have been issued, you wake up in the morning...........and there is nothing! Time will tell tomorrow though.

The amber warnings for NE England talk of 40cm of snow over some upland areas. I think the biggest totals are likely over the North York Moors. Maybe some thundersnow to add to the fun. Hope they've got their sheep in up there.

I'm just back in from a lunchtime walk in central Edinburgh. In direct sunlight it's actually quite warm, though in the shade you notice the bitterly cold wind. Most noticeable, though is the complete absence of any snow. Not surprising as showers are always hit and miss and and the BBC forecasts did call out that some places would miss snow.

The hyperbolae from the media and government on the other hand would have quite understandably led your average punter who is less educated about the vagaries of forecasting  snow showers to expect snowmageddon by now - so no surprise at people's cynicism.

Let's not forget the met office has not issued a red warning, nor has it claimed that it plans to. That claim has come from a government minister. Sure he may have "inside information" but his pronouncement is his own interpretation of that information not a verbatim summary of the information itself.

I can't help but think this radar is incorrect - given the met off and BBC have SW England dry - or maybe it's their new graphics !?

Some extremely nasty weather looks like it could impact this area in the coming days. The mid term warnings are for snow too which is quite concerning.

The Met Office have put no depths on our Amber Warnings, so I'm guessing this could still be a non-event, and in a crazy way I'm not so sure that would bother me now. There's snow and then there's SNOW, and I have operations to run for the business across the south. Not good

Bbc news 24 looks a mess to me just now ,temps look wrong in places 4 c ,then a 0c slapped on the map not far away ?.

They've also stopped using the word cold and replaced with 'raw'.

Thursday windy with prolonged snowfall and significant accumulations, and an increased risk of ice. Friday and Saturday will probably bring further snowfall and ice. Most parts staying very cold.
